I have been lurking on the site for a while and I decided to start posting again. This is the bus I am working on now. I am trying to get it drive-able for our show in August, the
Tannehill Bug Blast.

My plans are to get it roadworthy, do the metal work while I continue driving it, and then once it is solid again I plan to do all the filler and paint blending at once...Gonna run the OG paint as long as I can, and then one day repaint it. Right now it is going to be lowered on stock 15's but I would like to change to nicer wheels at some point. But I want safari windows first.

Here is a picture of it take years ago by my friend Adam...

Here it is a few years later when I first saw it (May 2009)...

Here is is about to be put in the crusher, as I chased them down to stop it...Ok not really...They were actually loading it on my friends trailer after I bought it Laughing

This was all in August 2009 I think...

I agree and without the drivers door the dog leg looks ok.. I have seen way worse with all the parts there. Look forward to the build.

Here is is right after I got it off the trailer and got a new front beam under it...

This beam had been sitting in the dirt half way up the drum for years and they were stuck so badly they wouldn't budge. So I built a puller...

I also got a new door from my friend Jake, and then ripped the hinge off as soon as I closed it the first time... Laughing

Still debating if I should cut it up for patches or just sell it on the classifieds..it would need a repair section from Gerson to be usuable so I doubt I could sell it...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

But then in 2010 I found a Sea Blue door on here...It came from PA which I think is funny as there is a PA dealer sticker on the bus too.

Before...

I had no experience with body work before, but I jumped right in and started cutting and replacing...I made some mistakes and there were things I would have done differently..But you gotta learn somehow Laughing

Oh and if anybody is worndering if bay metal will work on a split, the ribs are shaped differently...A fact I noticed after doing all this work welding it in...The engine lid hinge carrier is the same on a '71 Bus and a '67 though because this one fit just fine...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I just had to do a lot of other repairs before I could replace it...

I made this patch and then lost it when I was trying to hold it and grind the paint off like an idiot..The grinder grabbed it and launched it somewhere into space I assume...I haven't come across it anywhere in the yard to this day. Other than almost dying I had to redo the patch panel so it sucked... Laughing

Here it is welded in, and then the outer panel as well...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The other side wasn't so bad so I only had to patch a little bit of the outer panel. Ideally I should have just cut the whole corner off and replaced everything underneath, but I don't wanna put that much time and money into this bus...I just sprayed a ton of Ospho in between, primered, and hoped for the best. I think it will last a really long time if I park the bus out of the rain and waxoil it every few years...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I had to do a little work to the hinge carrier before I welded it in too. The nut plates were rotten, so I salvaged some and made a new piece to hold them in...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here is is finished...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I also fixed the bad spots in the bumper blade...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The entire blade was twisted so I had stuck it between part of my sandrail frame and twisted the entire thing back as close as possible. It also had a lot of dents, so I spent a few days pounding them out with a hammer and anvil. I got the worst spots pretty level, but it still needs filler. I will probably have to skim the entire thing and then sand it back out level. I could have probably found a better bumper, but I figured this would be good practice.

Well that's all for tonight. I'll post some more past progress tomorrow so you can see where I'm at right now on the bus...

Thankfully it didn't hit me in the face or neck because I am pretty sure I would be in bad shape now as sharp as the edges were...

Here's the progress from May til now...

Originally I was going to just patch the floor and drive it as is until I could fix it right. But I lost interest in the project for about a year...But then on a whim I bought a cab floor repair panel from Chadd (Ratlookvw) at Bug-a-palooza this year. That really got me motivated to do some work on the Deluxe...

Here it is loaded in the back of My '66 on the way home...

Here is the rust I am dealing with...

The A-Pillar had some holes too...I am going to replace the inner valence, a-pillars, and bottom of the nose at once, so I just patched the pillar for now. Ideally this should all be done at one time, but I don't have the money to fix all that stuff too and get the bus driving. If I started digging deeper now I am gonna lose motivation again.

I bought a inner dogleg section and fabricated the outer parts that were rusty. I should have bought a new outer dogleg as well, but I think this turned out ok...

Well that pretty much catches up the major stuff I have done. I am almost ready for the cab floor to go in. Then I am replacing to crossmembers under the bus. And then the rest of the August will be me getting the bus on the road again in time for Bug Blast. Hopefully Laughing

Classic! I remember doing stuff like this when I had an apprenticeship at a jaguar xk restorer years ago. The old boy who was meant to be training me would just shake his head at me in silent disbelief Embarassed Laughing

Laughing

I had a grinding wheel shatter on me the other day...It got caught up and must have gotten cracked and I didn't realize it. Until half of the wheel disappeared and the grinder started vibrating like crazy. It was a fiberglass reinforced wheel too, that was the scary part! Next time I have one bind up its going in the trash just in case it has cracks I can't see.

At the rate things are going, this thread will either end with some gory accident pics or a funeral..Not sure which Laughing

I always wear goggles and earplugs when grinding or cutting anything...Too many close calls already. And I tuck in my shirt now...

I've got the mount for the shifter/e-brake from a '64 that I cut up. It might be a lot better than what you have. You can have it if you need it.
