Sticking with my budget build philosophy, here's the latest.
The sub floor. Yep, I re-used the 36 year old floor. There was some damage from what looked like an oil spill towards the front, so I chopped that piece out and replaced it with some left over plastic board from a bathroom remodel.
Put some 3 mil plastic down, couldn't hurt.
Here's the floor in place.
This is all that was leftover from 1 box of laminate. The length was perfect, so no trimming there! Swiftlock Fireside Oak if anyone want's to know.
Who knows how much good this will do, but I put up a little insulation.
I decided against buying a full sheet of fancy laminate for driver's side panel.
I found some vinyl "planks" That matched the floor almost perfect. And, again recycled some paneling from the same bathroom remodel.
I used contact cement, didn't want to trust the sticky backing.
And the super fancy panel installed.
Not 100% done yet, but I got most everything cleaned up and bolted back in. I still have some laminate gluing to do, but it's getting there.

Time for a MAJOR update.
Chose the fabric for the curtains! Haha!
Yellow is the canvas material, and "textured sunset" for the curtains.
The excitement never ends!

I found some paint at Jerry's Artarama that is a really close match to the chrome yellow. They had one that was a shade or two darker that I might give a try if this one is too light.

So did you end up using this color to match the Chrome Yellow? Whats the name of the color? I happen to have a Jerrys near me and I'm anxious to fix the multi color pattern the PO gave my bus. _________________ -Patrick- |

Kind of. I used it on the cargo floor. It was a very close match, just a bit lighter. Might match the faded exterior paint pretty well.
On the advise of a couple others (Westfab and Kirk) I think I'll look closer into the "Preval system". I don't know what that is, and Kirk owes me pictures!
Brand, Plutonium

Here's what I did with the Preval system. It's great for small jobs and spot painting. Not appropriate for big jobs.

Like Dan said. Its great when you have some paint mixed and you need to shoot it without a full on spray rig. This is the materials I gathered to do my propane tank.
More pics to come. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

Thanks again Kirk/Westfabulous!
Kirk, I'm guessing you finished your tank rebuild?
So, would the entire nose be too big a job for the Preval system? _________________ 1976 Westy

Waiting on one more part, and I'm done. You know, I think you could do it honestly, but since it took two gas canisters to do my tank, I dont know how many it would take for your nose, but otherwise, I bet you could. OR Jerry (freightshaker) and I will paint it for you at his house with his HLVP sprayer. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

You could do it with a couple of Preval systems mixed up and ready to go. Expect the same coverage as you would with a rattle can, except, the Preval will have better flow and slightly better coverage. The hardened paint used in the Preval will be far superior to a rattle can by a country mile. It depends what you can live with; if you get lucky, it could be a pretty good result, but Preval is primarily for small jobs and offers the coverage of a rattle can spray bomb. Certainly not the most professional approach to repainting the nose, but it sounds like you are willing to make some concessions, in which case you might be pretty happy with the end result. What I can say is that if you do the prep work properly, and do everything well and conscientiously, the end result of the Preval can be stunning. There is nothing about my propane tank that could be improved in terms of the end result, but I went through it very carefully, epoxy primered it, and laid down some great, color matched paint. I have three Preval kits and 10 extra power units on hand at all times. I will be using it on my bumper guard restore (in my Visual Documentary thread) and you will be able to see the end result. Good luck. _________________ *****************

Jerry is not getting anywhere near my bus! I've seen his handywork on busses.

Good info. Sounds like it might be best for doing the cover under the driver's side rear window and maybe fading in over the misc. spots all over. I have access to a compressor and gun, so I'll probably go that route for the front. I've never painted a bus, but done a couple of bugs. I imagine just a nose job will be easy in comparison. _________________ 1976 Westy

Kind of randomly spotted some baseboard trim stuff at the hardware store that I thought might work well as the sliding door rail bash guard thing (whatever it's called). It was less than 2 bucks.
Compared to the old and before I trimmed it.

After:
Looks decent I think.
I haven't screwed down the transition piece, but the screws will go through the rubber and hopefully hold it in place.
More on what I did for that transition piece later. I'm not 100% happy with it and may go another route. _________________ 1976 Westy

Tiny update. I got my curtain material in.
I'm really trying to stick with a custom, yet "stock" appearance approach. While I appreciate what VW/Westfalia did with these machines, it's stressful and time consuming for me to stay 100% stock/OG, and that's just not fun. So, this is a bit of a compromise.
This is not my favorite color, but it seems to "fit" well.
I've got them cut, just need to stitch 'em up.

Boring update, just some cleaning. Honestly though, one of my favorite parts of working on a new VW.
Note all the insulation stuffed everywhere behind the nose.
And, cleaned out.
Before cleaning the cab floor.
After, it actually looks nicer than I expected. A lot of what I thought was rust was just dirt and grime. The driver's side will need a patch welded in, but I think I can get away with just treating and painting the passenger's side.
Passengers seat stand before.
I'll probably go back later and repaint this, but it'll do for now. I re-greased everything and the seat swivels and reclines much better now.
Driver's side before, it was pretty bad. Took about 10 minutes and a rubber mallet to work the seat track loose.
The foam from underneath the rubber mat was a pain. I found that a small wire brush used very carefully worked the best to remove it.
Also pulled off the rubber mat from the back side of the passenger's seat. This is one of the places I don't think I'll go "budget", fresh stock mats just look so nice.
A couple of part orders are in transit, so stay tuned. _________________ 1976 Westy
