Greetings Sambanistas..

I am trying to pull off my faulty U-Joint and endeavoring to replace it with a Terry Kay rebuilt one..

I have removed the screws holding the U-Joint to the steering rack and to the steering rod..

Is there enough clearance to pop off that U-Joint, or is this one of those disasemble the whole steering assembly jobs..

thanks

I have heat at the ready.. but don't want to dive in if I have to take it all apart.

Thanks

Noting in the Bentley, the illustration I have is of the round doughnut assy.

Searching for this nugget of information to remove this assy, only brings me to the marvelous Terry Kay U-Joint he is selling..

But I will have to assume that this old knuckle will pop off with heat..

And the installation of new Knuckle, and proper aligning of steering wheel will ensue..

No Luck...

This is not an area for a torch at least for me..

Thanks to all for pointing that out to me..

A Small fire was started..

Fortunatly I had my extinquisher, I did not need it, but did manage to melt a nice hole in my vacuum line..

Please note there is all types of plastic in this area.. and they burn really nicely..

So after getting another extinquisher, and some chisels, and locating a vacuum line it's back to work..

Can't wait to get this done

So I can get to the important stuff, wheels, sube conversions etc..

Hi, when I did my u-joint it came off real easy after the 2 bolts were removed. There was also enough room to get it off without taking anything else apart. Glad that you got it all back together and fixed.

When my u-joint was bad, the steering felt initially loose and clunky when oscillating the wheel back and forth slightly. I visually confirmed it was the u-joint by having someone wiggle the wheel back and forth. I saw some slop in there. Afterwards it felt much tighter. Most importantly the thought of it coming loose while driving was put to rest.

It connects the secondary steering column shaft and the actual steering rack. Not a common failure item, at least not on the west coast where corrosion isn't an issue.

I am replacing a seized steering ujoint on the Corter van, along with a rack swap and rebuilt suspension.
Not a how to but pictures will be posted during the next weeks as we are moving towards reassembly.

I just replaced all 3 flex couplings on my steering shafts with urethane. I kept an eye out for the u joint, but did not see one. I have an 84 westy with manual steering. My question is, is the u joint only used on power steering? Thanks!! BackyardBob

Steering hard then easy then hard then easy is usually a sign of power steering pump issue (as per Bentley). I had that in the past an replacing the pump solved it. My u-joint has developed a slight knock - looking at it when someone moves the steering left to right shows a bit of play at the moment, when knock appears. Will be disassembling and figuring out, if it can be rebuilt.

My only symptom was a slight clunk when turning the steering wheel. New U-joint on sale from CIP-1 fixed it years ago.
