My standard dash lights were very very dim on my 71 deluxe. I know 73 and newer had nice dash lights, but I could not see mine.
First I replaced the bulbs with superbright leds. This was only slightly better.
The solution was to buy (local auto parts store) 2 12v rope leds.
I took apart dash and stuck them inside around speedo and gas gauge, and now I can see great, only drawback is that they are really white. Maybe yellow leds would be better, but I am happy with the results.
I wanted to pass this on, cuz early bays are hard to see the speedo at night.

Are they dimmable? What was the part number? Who makes them? How much are they. This info kinda helps passing it on _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

I wanted to use blue, but I called to ask some ?s the guy told me some people say it makes dash look like a "black light"... is that true in your case? That would just distract me more that texting and driving _________________ 71' Bus "Sunshine"

Pitbug. Hmmm. Never even crossed my mind that they looked like black light. I'd say no. They are easy on the eyes at night. I had a rental car that had blue, which is what gave me the idea to use that color.
I'll try and post a picture. _________________ '72 Bus |

Did you splice it into the wire that connects all the bulbs? If not, how'd you power the led's? _________________ -Tony

sorry for the late reply ... the dog ate my email
I used one of the wires from the original bulbs, and spliced it to the leds, (with one wire to the ground lug), plenty of wire comes with them. |

This is awesome, can anybody post pics of these bad boys at night? I would like to do this, also wouldn't mind using extra lights to accent the inside of the bus _________________ -1973 Volkswagen Bus Westy (Weekender)

The first picture is the lights at night.
tho I think they look brighter in real life.
before, they were so dim you couldn't read it.
the tach to the right is very bright light bulbs, so you get an idea. _________________ 71 deluxe, 1968 type 1 engine rebuilt, 009 distributor, pertronix module, Empi 38 EPC / DGES carb |

Cool idea! I'm thinking about putting christmas lights in the back of my 71. Around the roof. I already have something similar in my room, because I like all the colors and to me they're easier on my eyes late at night then normal lights. |

Yes, the gas gauge and speedo dial are lit by led's.
Its an AFTER shot
the tach is the old bulbs (very bright)
Its' difficult to see the brightness level in the picture, but its great. Much brighter than before. If you have a newer bus, 73 or on, the normal dash lights are ok. But with the grey dials, the older bays speedo is too dim. Especially if you have other gages that are bright in the area. _________________ 71 deluxe, 1968 type 1 engine rebuilt, 009 distributor, pertronix module, Empi 38 EPC / DGES carb |
