84mm crank, 5.5"rods, Mg case.

would 5/16" be "better" than the 3/8" in terms of space and clearancing?

5/16 will need much less material to be removed. I've used both and the 3/8 rods are a bit bigger and need more room. Anyhting you can do to keep material in the engine case is a benefit.

use the 3/8 unless you using a 90mm crank then it may be thining out the case, then get a thicker case or smaller rod.
