Do you have any trips planned for this fall? Are you currently on a trip? Where are you? How is it going? How's the van running?
I've got a serious case of the "stuck-on-a-tiny-spit-of-sand-with-WAY-TOO-MANY-PEOPLE blues." I'm not one to wish time away but I'm doing all I can to keep my eyes on the end of September when this job ends and I can get into my van and drive west.
So, if you don't mind, whisk me away into whatever fun you're having right now or any cool trips you're planning. I need a good mental fantasy!
Much appreciated.
Luka
PS: I am, however, extremely grateful to have work at all. _________________ 1987.5 wolfsburg hardtop; 2.1

Leaving for the Oregon Coast next Wednesday, first road trip in the Westy other than a couple of shake down runs to get her ready. Its going to be a pretty hot drive (no A/C in the aircooled) but we will stop in Sisters, OR for the night then continue to Florence the following day. Other than replacing the front bearings and fuel filters the newly rebuilt engine is running strong. Still can't get the fridge to light on propane but the rest of the kitchen is now fully functional. Would love to meet up with some other Samba peeps, shoot the breeze and share some brews while we are there. Staying at Beverly Beach Saturday and Sunday so if anybody sees a silver Westy with Idaho plates be sure to stop in and say hello. Not an exciting story for ya but get you thinking about your next trip. Cheers, _________________ ShultzRoadHouse

I love hearing about people visiting OR since I've lived in Portland on and off since '97. I'm out here for my summer job.
Are you driving from Boise? You should mos def stop in the Wallowa Mtns in E. Oregon if you've never been.
I have no a/c either. I did just recently purchase a fan
http://www.amazon.com/Fan-Tastic-Vent-01100WH-Endless-Breeze/dp/B0000AY2Z6
of which I'm loving while sleeping. It is a bit pricey but worth it for its low amp draw and quietness.
Say hello to the PNW for me... thanks for taking me there, now. _________________ 1987.5 wolfsburg hardtop; 2.1

Yup, leaving Boise and driving on HWY 20 through Burns and Bend. That fan looks crazy cool. I added another grab handle to the drivers side a-pillar just for a fan to blow some air on me. Its not bad driving her in the 90's but its been in the 100's here lately so Im trying to get an early start so I can be in the Cascades before the extreme heat. Work blues suck, being stuck in the office looking out the window at the mountains is making me 'blue'. _________________ ShultzRoadHouse

ShultzRoadHouse: If you are headed South from Florence through Coos Bay, look me up. My Wife and kids will be away up in Portland with the Bluestar, but I have my Westy here at home and my Doka in the repair shop. You and yours are welcome to park the van in the back parking lot, grab a shower and join me for some homebrews and a local foods bbq. Pmail me if you are interested.
PS: don't worry about not having any AC in Oregon, especially the coast, you'll probably end up needing the heater. _________________ ~Bryan

I have been on a van trip with my brat and its been OK so far. I did have a ipod burn out on me other wise so far so good. We have stopped in a few places. Nashville TN,Eureka springs AK Bentonville AK, about 20 parks and towns in Colorado. Then picked up some hitchhiker in Colorado springs and headed to ND&SD then Montana, Washington, Oregon,California. Staying on the coast all the way down to LA. Still on the road in AZ. So far I have meet up with the guys at Rocky mountain westy and Northwestys for a awning swap then FNGRUVN carterzest Jon_slider Drewerd and the Lost Burritos vanagon Crew plus a stop at van cafe 500$ later for things I wanted but could have gotten some other time. Oh well saved on shipping and got a few bags of cookies. Stayed at Burelys for a day and had lunch with Seth hatfield and Burely. As you can tell I like shops. I took the kid to the Santa Barbara wharf and the strand in Manhattan beach then Cars Land then finished up at a movie at Grauman's theater in Hollywood. Oh right I did spend a few days in Yosemite's and visited John Wessels. Besides horse back riding fishing and jet skis that's all I can remember so far. I will be heading back soon as I started on 7/4 and school starts in a few weeks. I think I will float down the Ichetucknee Springs before I go back. hope this helps. |

I was going to tell about how I just got back from driving up through CA to the OR coast, through coos bay then east to PDX, then NW to the WA coast, up to Neah bay, back east through the olympics to seattle, then back south to PDX and finally the CA coast again ~3K miles over 2 weeks.
In comparison to Alaric's trip though it sounds like I started the truck and drove into the next door neighbor's driveway. |

Not a road trip, wife asked for it so no camping this time around, just returned from a two week stay in Mayan Riviera in Mexico, lots of beach time and drinks, great Mayan ruins were visited, great weather and now back home we all have a serious case of the blues, really depressed having to go back to our jobs and three days of overcast windy weather in Alameda. We are already dreaming about our next road trip and counting the days to the next holiday... _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Totally helped! It's so much! First of all, I love that you're taking your kid out on a trip. What a gift you're giving him/her. If I had kids, that's what their summers would look like.

We're leaving tomorrow from Portland headed to North SF bay area for a few days with the extended family. Then up to the Yosemite high country for 4-5 days of climbing, staying in Tuolumne Meadows. Then to Tahoe to stay with friends for a few days, then a blast back to Portland. _________________ '86 Westy, 2.5 Subaru power

Mmmmmm....... Y'all are making me so hungry for the West!! This is exactly what I needed, a stroll down "old haunts" lane. It's sad that I spend most of my time here (as east as you can get) thinking about all of those places back there.
I guess I know where my heart is, geographically. This is a good thing to know. _________________ 1987.5 wolfsburg hardtop; 2.1

Its interesting, you want to be here on the west coast and I'm making plans to trip across the country. I especially want to see the upper east coast. But of course I know I'll be back home after about six weeks.
Your right about having a job, if I hadnt had one I couldnt afford to do this travel thing.
good on you. |

the Syracuse crew of 4 VW campers took a 4th of july 1900mi new england excursion.
we recently returned home in Central Upstate NY from a 2week trip from NY to Maine via Vermont and New Hampshire Mtns.
then 4days on the acadian coast before returning again via Central NH and Vermont stopping to join West River westies..
saw Timwhy in Maine & Vermont.
awesome scenery in Bar Harbor and all of Acadian coast..
as little interstate as possible of course.. lots of twisty 2ndry roads.. and some undeveloped areas..
highlights were
crossing vermont on Rt 17 via the Camel's Hump
nearly all of the presidential range in NH
Maine coast, most noteably Acadia, and a great little sandbar access path in Jonesport, ME.
eating at Papa Pete's in Bennington, VT great as always.
planning a VW group trip to DC & the Smithsonian in Thanksgiving.. a last hurrah before put them away for winter.
2013 possibly Saguenay Fjord Quebec or maybe Buses & Balloons in Albuquerque, NM _________________

I'm taking a week off and spending it in my garage. I travel too much for my job, so staying home is the best vacation I can imagine. |
