I've searched the forums, but haven't found what I'm looking for. What is involved in replacing the rear bumper mounts? The part that is attached to the rear wheelwell. All 4 of my bolts got snapped off during disassembly, and the previous owner was kind enough to weld 1 of the brackets to the car.
Also, while I'm asking questions, how do I get the inside part of the shock mount off of the front shock bolt. Do I just need to get some heat on it with a set of vice grips? |

Did you replace the whole quarter or did you drill out the replacement also. Both sides of mine are rusted out, I drilled out the driver's side tonight, but I need a better drill bit to finish up the passenger side. Anyone know if it's possible to buy replacement pieces? |

You can, or you can try to find metal from other vws and weld in replacements with old metal. Wolfsburg sells most of these parts, and they rarely get faulted for quality. That said, the old metal is almost always thicker, heavier duty stuff in my experience. Depending on the year of your car and the style bumper mount, it may be easy to drill out the old spot welds, clean the area and weld in any rusted out spots, and then weld an og mount using plug welds. I did this by driling 3/8 inch holes in my mount wherever there had originally been a spot weld, and plug welding them in the same spots to the metal. If you do a nice job, it looks a lot like the original spot welds, and you end up with the same gauge steel as original.
I can't believe po's would actually weld brackets to the mounts. What a bad idea.

I only replaced the actual bumper mount. My car was a '66 and the mount is unique to 1966/67 only, so no reproductions available. I had to find a donor piece. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

What year do you have? If you're searching for 1961-65 bumper mounts, you're in luck. Lots of venders carry replacement mounts. Part #111809635A for the Left side. Part # 111809636A for the Right side. Replacements run about $20/ea

Mine was just slightly kinked with one bolt snaped off in it. The inner metal also had a rust hole in it behind the bumper mount. The after market panel is not that bad it just needs a little tweek along the bottom edge to make it look good.
finished product. Aftermarket metal. you'll need to seperate the apron if you do it this way.

Car is a 58, initially bought it thinking it was a 59, thus the name. I actually was able to grind off the bumper bracket last night. Then went about dulling 5 or 6 drill bits to remove the bumper mount.
This is the driver's side. The passenger side is going to require a lot of metalwork as there is tons of rot behind the bumper bracket. |

Depending on how accurate you are focusing on your car's repair, Pre '60 bumper mounts are double the price. If you settle on the 1961-65 style, they will fit & work correctly, just NOT look correct.

An extra 40 bucks isn't that big of a deal really. Rather spend the money now and do it right than have to do it later when I actually go for a proper resto. |

Apologies for the ignorance, but how exactly do you get these off? From what I'm getting from the thread, grind the face down until you see the spot welds and then drill them out?

Yeah, you need to sand down the perimiter of the mount until you can see where the spot welds are, then use a spot weld removing bit on the spot welds. I'm getting ready to do this myself. The PO cut mine up and bent both upward when he/she broke some bolts off in them.

You have the idea; sand or grind until you see the factory spot welds. I used a 1/8" titanium bit in the center of each weld, followed by a 3/8" titanium bit to drill out each spot weld. You'll see and feel the bracket pop loose as you free each weld with the larger bit. Match your replacement part to the holes you made, clamp, and the plug weld each old spot weld point.
As mentioned, there is a tool for removing spot welds that would do the trick without changing bits. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

If you just have a nut that broke free try this,
If bracket is not too damaged or rusty, cut out piece of angle, weld nut on and replace. worked great |

I have one thats bent from a collision thats been poorly repaired and welded on and the other has rust holes on the top of it. for some stupid reason I can't upload pics from my iphone anymore. |
