k well after again replacing the plugs wires an a couple odds and ends i solved my stalling and loping idle problem. but i have a rough idle and rough acceleration still. i was gonna try settin the timing and i removed what i assumed was the bolt and the damn thing dont turn. one suggestion i was giving by another vw owner was upgrading to an electric ignition. i needc to get this fixed soon before i do some serious damage to engine. now it seems rough and smokes alot on take off. any suggestions anyone anyone? its a 78 transporter far as engine size i donno, and its got the a two barrel carb on it HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Have you run a compression test?
you most likely have a 2.0L engine. _________________ I learn so much in here, sometimes it makes my head hurt.

Your carb could be dirty, and in need of a rebuild and cleaning. A kit isn't expensive, and you can probably find directions online, or someone here might be able to help. Jeremy |

You don't "remove" any bolt or nut to set the timing. The strap that holds the distributor has a hex rod (10mm) adjuster on it. It's about an inch long and you loosen this rod in order to turn the distributor and set the timing. Don't remove the 13mm nut that attaches the strap to the engine case. Just loosen the hex rod. Good luck. _________________ "Well, we shot the line and we went for broke

Is it a Weber Carb? I had really bad problems that sound a lot like yours with the Weber 2 barrel that was in my '79 bus. Go to the Advanced Autoparts store or whatever in your area and they should have a book detailing Weber carb adjustment methods in the same place that the Haynes manuals are displayed. That should help you set the timing. Also, read the Idiot's Guide description of setting timing using a Strobe (which you should have or borrow at this point) and follow it.
BTW, make sure your points are set before you adjust timing, otherwise all will be for naught.
The "Idiot's Guide" does a pretty good job of explaining the procedure, I think... _________________ 79 Deluxe Bay
