I cut out all the panels for the headliner and the doors. A few panels still need a holes drilled for the chrome snaps around the parameter of the door panels. Hopefully in the next week i will have time to get to staining the interior and figuring out why the engine is running lean above 2000 RPM.
The home-brewed tow bar held up like a champ and got the bus to the local VW shop for some attention to the carbs and a leaking rear main seal.

I have a '70 Bay and I'm interested in the 1776/4.57 R/P Trans combo. I drive my Bus everyday through a rural area. Stop and go, red lights, etc about 30 mls one way. But I go to a lot of shows and I'm on the freeway for most of those trips. I've been told with a stock 1600 that this set up would not be an easy driver. Sluggish on start and hills would be difficult. I don't want to kill the rural drive to work. _________________ rpm750

I'm sorta curious how it's going to perform as a daily as well with this combo. The little bit of cam from the 110 isn't helping either. From the short trips I have driven thus far though it has been fine. But until it has legal plates it won't see more than third gear cruising around the block.
On the diesel caddy I found that having a set of the tallest tires i could find worked out great for road trips and using a set that are closer to stock for daily driving reduced the sluggishness of a diesel. You maybe able to run a shorter tire if you find the engine running hot on the 1600. _________________ 1973 Campmobile http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Installed new 40 IDFs. These things are so much smoother than the Solexs were. Just about ready to get it registered and put it on the road.
Also picked up a color matching slider door with sliding glass from craig's list. If anyone wants a brown and white door they are welcome to it, ill sell for cheap.
Clutch blew on the caddy so the bus will be back burnered for a bit. I'll be getting rid of the 02O for an OJA/O2J with really tall gears.

The outside appearance has not changed much other than these awesome Vermont plates and matching air freshener!!!!
Got the plates in the mail on Thursday and have been nothing but smiles since. I have put maybe 100 miles on the bus since then and it has been a blast! Finally finished converting the Mk1 truck to a Mk4 transmission and can start focusing attention on the bus.
First impressions are that this transmission is really tall when mated to the 1776cc. Its great for gears 1-3 but 4th is really tall if the grade is greater than a few degrees. Still gotta hook up the CHT probe but the oil temps and pressures have been great thus far. The fan on the oil cooler picks on after freeway stretches which shout be expected since its been 100F+ everyday in the valley. _________________ 1973 Campmobile http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

haha, totally agree!
I'm assembling the K-type thremo couple harness now so i can measure CHTs for each cylinder and the EGTs for number 3. Once I know the engine wont be melting anything then we can see how she likes 65+ MPH. I have a feeling it will be time to start collecting Raby parts to put together a Camper Special clone. Although the oil temps never got over 210 while cruising at 65 MPH.

Continued to drive the bus to work each day this week and it preformed better than I expected. So this weekend I decided to put her to the test and drive up to the local mountain which is about 8500 ft at the highest paved surface. It was some slow rolling for parts but she did great overall and seemed to really like the cold air up top. On the freeway with a gradual grade i could do about 50-55 MPH and keep the CHTs at 380. On the way home it would cruise 65 MPH at 360 degrees all day. There were some 3rd and even second gear sections but I made sure to keep the CHTs to 380 or less.
The throttle felt very rough as you depressed the pedal and it didn't feel like I was ever getting full throttle. So i got down on the floor today and noticed that the hole in the pedal was elongated to about half an inch long. I made connecting rod for the pedal and welded two washers to the pedal to help locate the new push rod. I could not find a 5 or 6 mm left hand thread rod end locally so this version is just two stainless bolts welded together with lock nuts.
She is still running really lean when off throttle and at idle but I have an appointment with a local carb guru to get a second opinion. So far this has been the most rewarding car I have ever driven! _________________ 1973 Campmobile http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Thanks busdaddy.
I still need to replace the front dog legs and under several of the windows. If I could find a local painter and body man i would send it off now but i don't think I could afford to pay someone else to finish the metal work. My plan is to finish the interior and get the most of the sheet metal done this fall and spring and maybe send it off for paint next summer when its too hot in the desert to really enjoy driving an air cooled.
Tested out the new throttle pedal reach. had to do it just once

plenty of time to go out in the wild and enjoy the crap out of it without worrying about pinstripes down the side of the bus....go make the rest of us get motivated to fix our busted busses! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose
