Next up was the Chirco Bugtoberfest and Red Barn Roundup.
A few of the show "policies" didn't jive with me, so after enjoying the campout, I donated my show entry fee and headed off on my own adventure. First up, Saguaro National Park:
A few hikes and a 9-mile one way loop was a perfect way to spend a morning before heading back for work that night.
The end of the trip was a loop through to Colossal Cave, where I took my signature photo.
We're heading out into the Tonto Forest this weekend for some more adventures. Pictures to come! _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Great pics Robbie, thanks for posting the update. Looking forward to the next time we bump into each other. BTW, your bus is a real beauty. One of the nicest early Bays I've seen. (The gal translating German wasn't too bad either ) _________________ 71 Superbug

Last weekend was Tonto National Forest, and Canyon Lake, AZ.
Friday night was spent heading down dirt roads looking for camping sites. Not too great here, as the parking brake wouldn't hold without being in gear… The rock made me feel better.
We settled for a pay-site at Canyon Lake, which is beautiful!
Tortilla Flat, the free campground nearby was closed for the season, and the town was deserted.
Had I had anyone else with me, I'm sure I would have taken a lot more (and better) pictures of the bus! _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

So the 4 residents of Tortilla Flat wern't home? Thanks for more nice pics. Canyon Lake is an awesome long rugged deep canyon for boating, plus a trailhead into a neat part of the Superstitions. I've taken the bug up there and on up to Fish Creek Hill but never the bus. It's kind of a goal to someday do Fish Creek Hill in the bus. An extreme bus venture and photoshoot location. hint-hint-hint _________________ 71 Superbug

You have done your bus up nicely, and coming from me, a stock purist, that is high praise. Thanks for sharing. _________________ *****************

That is indeed some pretty high praise from the most Fabulous Westy guy.
The exterior is very nice but it is the interior that was the eye catcher. It is quite far removed from being an original stock Westy. So there really isn't recognition that it is a non stock Westy. _________________ 71 Superbug

That is indeed high praise, and especially welcome coming from you two, thanks!
The only real remnants of it's previous life as a Westy are the bed and camper windows. And I'm trying to get vented or sliding windows, so it will be even less! I do camp the hell out of it though!

Hey, maybe one of these days I'll be in your neck of the woods too! And if you're not down here by next summer I think I'll be up there first. Thanks for the kind words _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Not home, although I did run in to two prospector-types, with a van and a trailer that read "Smoking guns for hire" and I was worried. I hope they were a traveling show, not bounty hunters…
I just looked at some videos of fish creek hill, and man, I'm glad I didn't do it this weekend! I've only been on about 10 miles of dirt roads total in Buddy, and I would definitely have to do a once-over before that
Between the extreme butt-sag and a deep sump, I'm going to raise a few clicks before trying that. But soon _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

No problem at all with butt sag or sump clearance since it is a real nice smooth graded road. However a 2-way narrow single lane snaking down the cliff face is a trip and a half. A good horn, good brakes, guts of steel and no squimish passenger is all that's needed. Going down you're on the inside and have to back up to a wider spot since uphillers have the rough deal practically hanging over the edge. But it's one of the most beautiful spots in all of AZ.
You're just gonna' have to do it _________________ 71 Superbug

After the Canyon Lake trip was the AZ Bus Club Christmas parade exhibit, where I destroyed my pressure plate and did my first engine drop thanks to ALL the help on here
Next up was a trip to the California and back, where the only issue was the condenser wire wiggling off the coil.
1500 miles and one quart of oil later, I ended up in McDowell Mountain Park, AZ, for a bit of hiking/camping and photography:
From there, Buddy and I headed to Sedona, AZ for an early Valentines Day. (not with each other, )
It was a LITTLE cold there, and I FINALLY bit the bullet and bought a Mr. Heater……
We also debuted the 1600 dual port coffee maker:
Aaaand we ran out of gas on the offramp to the house!
All in all, some VERY fun times with family, friends, and loved ones. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

This is the best thread. My favorite kind, by far. Full of good photos, great stories and a couple of videos to boot. Thank you so much for sharing. I hope one day we can meet up with you and your Bus.
Were you, by chance in the San Diego area recently? I swear I saw your Bus on the freeway one day.
Great post, thanks again for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words everyone- we do a lot of work on these machines, and the payout is always worth it to me.

I wasn't near there, but in January I was near Ventura/Oxnard and The Valley quite a bit.

I hope Honeybadger status doesn't apply to my bus maintenance. Because I am ALL OVER that stuff But yes, this is the second time in two weeks... Luckily I have found some generous passers-by and I keep 50 feet of Kevlar para-cord in my box. Everyone is so surprised when I loop that around and it holds all the way to the gas station... _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!
