Excellent thread Notchboy. I have been leaning towards the Bus Depot tent until I saw the new Bus Depot Awning with screened enclosures. Ideally I would love to have the tent on the side of the sliding door and the awning on the other side. For me the original tents are way too much work to put up, take up way to much space and are antiquated in terms of technology. If I was going to be living in the woods it might be a different story. Amazing how many people are trying to sell the original tents.

At the Flagstaff High Altitude VW Kampout there were wads of buses everywhere but it seems like about half of them were hidden from view by all the many tents. Almost as if the whole thing had turned into a tent show.

Here is a tent I came across a couple of years ago. I think Jason knew what it was. Seller would not negotiate on the price so I passed. It was all a heavy canvas.

I purchased one of these (VWoA) a couple of years ago from a local samba member and have only used it once during my maiden voyage road trip to Florida in Oct. 2010.
First time setting it up was quite a chore. But it worked very well. Sadly, I don't have any pics of it set up. But its in excellent condition.

My 78 Riviera came with a side tent and a separate awning that have a rope sewed on them that feeds through a metal half tube that is attached to the bus. Then you put up the poles and guy lines. I haven't erected them yet, but I was pleased to get them with the bus. The material is heavy canvas with no floor on the tent. they look brand new. I got a big sealable tub from Wally world so they won't get dirty or mildew. This weekend I change the fuel lines and then I will be ready for campout number one.

There's a vid as well but it's in Dutch. It will however show the tent inside frame.

It's quite big, so during travel I store it on the roofrack.

This one is pretty cool! I saw some other photos of it being used where the awning was connected to the bus, acting as shade for both and a breezeway also.

We scored this VW Motent off craigslist last year and got to try it out at Buses By The Bridge. It was pretty easy to set up and worked great.

Now this is what Im talking about! Ive never even heard of a Motent? Cool as hell. What are the details? Is it just another VW offered option like the regular Westy Tent or was this for special markets?

Every time I see old camping pics from the late 60-70s people have these cool tents in Europe. If I dont get carried away with other things-Id planned on getting one like this as well. Very cool indeed. Nice bus by the way Wink

I have an original Westy side tent that I really do like. It gives the vintage feel and look. Sometimes it is a little bulky to transport and seems to get pretty hot in the summer.

The other day I found this Herzog tent on Craigslist and picked it up for a steal at $75. I've heard of Herzog tents but have never seem this model before, but it is made for a bus. Attaches to the raingutter and doesn't interfere with the sliding door. All sides except for the left side open up completely so it almost turns into an awning, which is nice on super hot days. It doesn't have a floor, but has a hanging sleeping compartment with a floor. It would probably sleep 3-4 pretty comfortably. Perfect for the kids. All of the poles are integrated into the tent and it sets up in a matter of minutes and fits in one big bag. Ease of use is really nice. This will probably be my go to tent in warmer months.

Does that Herzog have a skirt to go under the door opening on the bus?

No, it doesn't. That is one of the things that I don't like. With the Westy tent you can leave the door to the bus open and not worry about raccoons and other critters coming in while camping at state parks. But at the same time, the Herzog allows easy access for backpacks and other stuff you want to store under the bus.

This is a tent made by Devon. Probably offered just in Europe. It came in 2 yellow duffle-type bags with a tan rubberized canvas floor. It has a tag on the tent near the botton of the front entrance that says "VW MOTENT".

This is what the tag looks like (from Google images):
