Looking to install a automatic script on the rear hatch of my bus & wanted to get some measurements for where to drill the holes. Thanks in advance.

A correct emblem for an automatic Bus doesn't require holes, they were adhered with double sided tape from the factory. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Mine has 3 posts sticking out of the back of the script & i removed it from a 73 auto i parted out a while back. Now i'm putting this script on my 73 Riviera. Looks orig. to me, even has the VW stamp on the back

They were not exclusively attached with two sided tape. Most of the earlier ones had three pins on the back, and a couple of pieces of two sided tape to prevent the script from rattling. In your case, you will need to drill three holes, or grind off the pins and use two sided tape exclusively. The vast majority that I have seen have pins; all of mine do. In this era of excellent 3M two-sided body moulding tape, you might opt not to drill the holes. The tape should hold it forever. _________________ *****************

Maybe that's the deal...I've only ever had a couple of late automatics, not an early one. The emblem was plastic IIRC and definitely didn't have pins. The earlier automatics must have had the emblem like yours. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

i would almost rather drill holes than grind the pins, but now i'm still not sure of the location of the script itself. I guess it wouldn't look bad anywhere in that general area, but i'm sure someone has some measurements? |

I'll measure for you if someone doesn't post in the meantime. I'll post today or tomorrow. I can give you the vertical and horizontal placement (off the driver's side of the hatch), and you will have to mark the pins and drill, as I can't see my pins given that the script is mounted up against the hatch. _________________ *****************

I recently bought a 1973 automatic bus. It has the original VW automatic emblem. My 'V' is a little bent in, so I measured from the bottom left corner of the 'W' from the edge of the door/hatch. It is 4 3/4 inches from the left edge of the door/hatch and 3 and 3/4 inches from the bottom edge of the hatch. I do not know if my emblem is pegged or taped, and I don't want to take it off right now. Hope this helps. |

That should be close enough, I'll go measure it up & see how she looks |

I will still measure mine for you. I found this in the gallery, and it should give you a sense of scale. It doesn't look 4 and 3/4" from the left side.

Got the script put on, using Wasted youth's measurements would put the posts all 4 inches up from the bottom edge of the hatch, & 4 3/4 inches from the left edge of the hatch to the bottom left corner of the W
Looks good enough for me. Thanks for the help

Cool! Glad to help. I haven't been able to do a damn thing to my bus since I got it, except make a home for it inside my garage. But that's better than being outside, right? So, right now I am reading Bentley, Muir and Wilson. |
