I never had. Found it in a junkyard on a bay that had the engine tin cut for the compressor. I got it off, but it cracked the back screw hole out when I was momentarily startled by three black widow spiders. I had never seen one before, and wondered if you could buy them new, where they came from etc. Are they repopped?
I'll take better pics of it later. Seemed super handy, but you guys have probably seen them before. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

Well, I could send you a half dozen for $5 if you like. They like my woodpile out back.
Just kidding! Are you talking about that dark colored bolted on plate? That looks kind of like a homemade patch...? Or what? Is it formed rubber or steel? |

Hmm. I wondered. It fits the curvature of the seal pretty well. I cant imagine what else this would have fit. Ill post a better pic. Although, my first thought was homemade as well. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

I'm going to go with OEM patch panel bolted in place instead of welding.
That is not going to be made in somebodys garage (unless they have a lot of metal working tools and experience) _________________ Failure is always an option. |

My current bus was originally from Cali and has the same plastic thing. Had a sticker on the back window stating "VW Dealer Air Conditioning". There was suppose to be a compressor in that area which my bus didn't have. The heater box and air pipe on that side of the engine were slightly different from normal also to make some space for the compressor. I would guess the removable plastic allowed one to remove the compressor for servicing w/o having to drop the engine. |

if you get that and you want to ship it to me, i could duplicate a few out of steel. i know you and a few others asked about one out of my scabby ass parts bus.
thing is, it would be a duplicate of that part, so it it worked to fill the a/c hole in a reasonable manner that the late bay guys would be ok with, i'm game _________________

Definately not homemade, but made out of very brittle plastic. I figured werksberg or someone else would be able to make them out of ABS or something, but steel would be better. Take a look at these (I'll take more with my real camera if needed.)

I would definetly have the repoped as many out there need a better patch than they currenty have. Great find. My last two buses needed that part. I butchered some tin to fill my gap then. Ugly. _________________ Special Thanks to:

Thanks...but the tooling costs and production numbers need to break even would far out number sold units.
Take up the guy's offer to have them made in sheet metal. _________________ Werksberg Products....Products that work!

It was a company named Dura-Fibre that sold them to VWOA and offered
them for sale to DPD (a/c company) and others since the A/C units were
either installed at the port of entry or at the dealer.
Dura-fibre was a Long Beach,Calif. Corporation and now makes all types
of corrorgated plastic items. or so it say's in fine print.
Personally I never did A/C work @ the dealer and donot ever remember
installing any of them but i tore open a couple of old boxes of info and will
post it asap.
There were those customers back then that didn't want A/C but, did want
the bus.So thats when they were installed thru the bodyshop.
Kinda like buying a 1977 Porsche Targa with A/C. Why? _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

I am very much a details guy, and I really enjoy the vintage dealership perspective that you bring to these discussions O DKP D. Thanks for your contributions. Incidentally, my AC needs a 134a conversion, which I have done myself on other cars, but Mrs Westfab's original R12 AC still blows arctic cold after 36 years. _________________ *****************

I haven't been able to get out to my bus since the start of this thread, but I posted a bunch of pictures today, and saw mine by chance:
It looks like a pretty standard part of the whole engine install. I presume that it is not factory, but a Dealer install for the A/C? Then, would that mean the deck/apron would have to be cut away by the Dealer for this bolt on piece to be installed? |
