9/16 Tap ... go thru the Bushing and let it bottom out ...as it bottoms out it will push the Bushing towards you Smile ..... simple operation

to install a 12volt Bushing, find a long Bolt that just fits inside Bushing, and build it up with Electrical Tape so it's snug ..... and tap it in

Save yourself a lot of work and get an auto-stick starter which has it's own self supported bushing. Pretty much the same price as the manual trans starters - they also have a bit more torque IIRC.

The bushing is not on the starter shaft its in the bellhousing bit if it were me and I had the funds I would do what old vw nut suggested and get an auto stick starter and never have to worry about it again.

thanks for the info.I have an old bosch 6 volt starter and seemed kinda inexpensive to go this route.
