So I saw this on craigslist. Its pretty close to me 60 miles. I offered to trade the guy a '93 supercharged mazda miata. For around the same price. 7000$. The miata is only going to lose value and gain miles. I've gotten two tickets in the past month for speeding. (one i was profiled, younger guy in a convertible "sports car" i was doing 70 MPH in a 65MPH with the flow of traffic and the other was 85 in a 65 Embarassed ) I've seen the rust spots, small little bubbles. Not going through the metal yet. So im thinking surface rust and its causing the paint to bubble up. Biggest section is probably 3inches by 2inches. Pan is great condition. Interior is pretty new. Not a fan of the dash but it has the original dash underneath. Wiring is intact and pretty good condition.

What do you guys think?

Im looking for a complete solid running car. This one seems to be it, minus the paint, dash, & door panels. All can be easily changed. Plus no one wants to buy the miata. il have better luck trading it.

no they cant all really easily be changed. Have you looked for a dash pad for a '65? you won't find one easily, and they are super expinsive when you do find it. Door panels, thats the easy part. Find the correct arm rests that split the two door panel pieces. And then the padded tops that go over the door panels. I almost never see them for sale in any kind of usable shape. Rear armrests are most likely gone. can't find those.

I havent even started on the engine, or what I percieve as a hacked rear fire wall. I wouldn't touch it anywhere near that price, even for your trade. Go burn your car or drive it into the lake, and collect the insurance. I'm kidding of course but that would be a better idea that undoing all the crap on that car.

Sounds like your mind is kinda made up, you're pretty defensive about it. I wish you luck

I just dont like things being shot down for things such as cosmetics. Theres a lot of guys on here that "if its not stock its not right." The way the current dash is set up I was able to look under and the dash seems in fairly decent condition its not great but its not trashed. Armrests im not worried about them being the originals. Firewall from what I could see when I checked it out didnt seem to be hacked up. but there was a limited view. Idk though, I see potential to bring it back closer to what it should look like then let it die off in its current condition. like I said I don't like things shot down solely on cosmetics.

Im looking for something that has minimal rust, pretty complete (regardless if its OEM parts or not), & in good running condition.

This guy is interested in trading for the miata. I wish I could drive it into a lake or burn it lol but insurance wouldnt give me what its worth. They'd only give me KBB or something similar which is around 3K.

Cosmetics on a Type 3 are a whole different ballgame. This car is a disaster in this regard. If you want a Notchback, there are way better candidates out there. If you want to trade the Miata for something that will increase in value, this is absolutely not the car. The hacks on this are a dud today and will be a dud tomorrow, next month, and next year.

The seller of this abortion, on the other hand, is getting one HELL of a screaming deal if he winds up with your Miata.

That doesn't make any sense. You asked for opinions and everyone has told you to pass. But if your mind is made up already... Rolling Eyes

If you really want go for it. However, keep in mind, that with winter coming (I know you're in California) the "no heat" might be a problem too.

Have you had an early type 3? I'm asking because you said the correct arm rests don't matter. but they actually do. The front stock door panels are 2 pieces, requireing the arm rest to hold it all in. And then the top pad that goes over it. And I'm only mentioning that, because you said door panels are easy to fix. In this particular case, they truley are not easy to replace at all. It was one of the problems I had with my notch, before TMI started making the door panels (they still require the arm rest) the top panel goes behind it, the bottom panel attaches to the front of it.

here's a good pic of what would be required. Top pad, white top panel, middle arm rest, lower door panel. This is just the front. The rear is 4 seperate pieces too. We arent talking about chump change here

I think this may actually be my old car lol

at the very least, you will need dual carbs, and the engine cover. I cant see what else is missing or just plain wrong from this pic. This is what it should look like

The painted bumpers and headlights...ok, not required but if you want those more original and chrome its gonna cost you. There's just a lot of stuff that is going to nickle and dime you on this car to fix it. If you go into it thinking your mazda is worth $3K, then ok, I guess it makes sense. Again, I wouldn't do it, but thats me and where I am in life right now. I paid $2200 for my sunroof notch, and was driving it that night. I had to, it was my only car as I had just sold my bus. All of us that have replied have been there and doine that, and are advising you, but we will still help you when you buy it and need help Very Happy

This wont be my daily. I already have a car for that. But I've wanted a notch for forever. I dont mind doing a little work. Paint of my color, bigger engine, an few things here an there. I understand how the door panels are, but i was just planning on rewrapping the current panels to get rid of the hippy suede or whatever material it is. I appreciate all your input I just wanted to make sure everyone wasnt shooting this car down simply because of paint, door panels and dash. I drove around a '67 bug with no interior at all for 2 years. So interior is least of my worries. But i will def keep my eyes open while i try an sell the miata. The miata is worth more then 3K (bunch of upgrades) but the way insurance sees it, its only about 3k so no driving it off a cliff somewhere to cash out lol

Man... I'm glad. None of us really wanted to piss in your Wheaties over this but that's almost a poster child for everything not to do to a Notch IMHO.

Yes, you will be. Here's why we like stock:

As the cars age, and many owners do their non-stock mods, usually BADLY, we now find ourselves spending more than half the restoration time/budget UNdoing what was done before, before we even get to the NEW work that needs to be done!

Starting with a stock car, even if in poorer condition, will be less work in the long run than a car like this one will demand.

I just want a decent one. Slightly lowered and a bigger motor. Not slammed on the ground just a little lower than stock. My bug was lowered to about 2-3 inches off the ground, loved the way it looked hated the way it drove lol
