Aloha,
Thought I'd share my shelving idea for the kitchen. Seems like there isn't enough cooking/work/prep space while out camping. These really come in handy, they fold away when not in use and give you quite a bit of area to store your kitchen supplies. I think the pictures say it all but any question let me know.
Cheers, Ron

I was super excited to read this thread, until I found out it doesn't apply to my bus. I'm pretty sure there is not enough room behind my drivers seat for those shelves... |
occurred to me that w/o the quote my reply might have seemed a little odd. It was done with tongue partly in cheek.

Ok, just saw this post. So for the Vanagon Westy owners.....
I'm eating dinner and too lazy to go outside to look at my Westy, but what about this:
- mount HD metal drawer slider on flat, in ~ same position of upper table hinge as shown.
- install piano hinge to drawer slider
- mount table to hinge
- make/install a post with a sliding arm. Like picture a post with cross mounted tube that arm slid through. Arm would rest behind driver seat until needed and would form an "L" regardless if in use or not.
Slide out and lift table, slide post arm out to support table.
This would put the new table to the RH of driver seat.
- enough room?
- HD slider extended too far thus structurally weak?
- Maybe have table mount some kind of telescoping tubes instead of slider?

I will live a long live Dave, and probably never ever again hear the term "off-the-shelf shelves,". Thanks for enriching my life and giving me a chuckle.

Isn't that right where my front smaller missing table should be? |
As far as I can see, yes; that's where the table would roughly be.
Was just spitballing an idea for the halibut.
Only advantages I can see, if it worked, is that setup/put away *might* be more convenient and all told, it might take up a *little* less room.

That might actually work on the vanagon. I've got other stuff mounted there and my seat modded so it slides back farther than stock.
But, if you slid your seat all the way forward or swiveled it when you parked, you could deploy the shelves and then unpack kitchen stuff onto them. Might work well for some essentials that get stored under the bench seat, but you want accessible when the bed is made. |

even if you made shorter shelves, it would be handy space. |

Nice idea! One thing that bothers me, is that you have to slide the drivers seat forward to use them. As a thought, could you have not made 3 shelves fit in the space on the side of the cabinet and gotten the same amount of sq. footage, and not have to slide the seat forward? _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Very clever idea. I'm sure something could be rigged to work in a Vanagon. For those with a Westy, don't discount the idea of using a Buese shelf on the poptop bar. It gives you a lot of extra shelf storage, it's not in your way, and has no moving parts to break.
