I would like to know more about my cam and crank. The engine is a 2275. So the crank is 82mm stroke. The engine has really good power, but it is so mild at idle and putting around easy theat I don't think the cam is a "Big Cam" Here are pics of teh numbers found on the cam and crank. If you know anything about this cam or its builder or this crank and its builder please post

Cam, It says: "ERSON", "VW", "20", On the other side of oil pump slot it says: "BC', "A" which is upside down under the B of BC. and the number "54"

Crank. It has this stamped onto the end of it. "6G208"

I found this searching around. It lists a bunch of cams, including Erson and Babe Erson but it doesn't seem to list your cam
http://www.actionimport.com/Tech_Files/cam_information.htm[/url]

I wonder if that cam was supposed to go with their 1.5-1.65 rockers?

The link above didn't work for me but I think this may be what was referenced:

Erson Cams

Cams use with 1.1:1 rocker arms (lift at cam)
E746522 274º 220º 0.380" 9.65 106º
E749622 278º 225º 0.440" 11.18 108º
E749422 280º 242º 0.441" 11.20 106º
E740422 288º 258º 0.470" 11.94 110º

Cams use with 1.25:1 rocker arms (lift at cam)
E745322 322º 286º 0.466" 11.84 110º

The "20" stamped on the cam might mean 220 degrees @ 0.050"???
Just a guess. No idea on the crank.

Swapped the Compufire for a Bosch blue and some points I had sitting around, started 1st crank. Took her out for a drive, pulls harder, more RPM, and runs smoother. I think I'll be sticking with points from now on.

I found a few posts that mention the Erson VW 200 but not the VW 20. Hopefully, someone will have an idea. A post I found said that Steve something racing has cams and they thought they were the old Erson grinds. If nothing else shows up, I'll find tht post again to get the correct name and call them and ask

I would really like to put 1.25 rackers on the engine but I don't want to until I know what the cam was designed for.

I plan on putting the dial indicator on the valves next Monday. That will at least let me post that info for more help.

Here's a list of Erson cams:

VW15, 220 degrees at 0.050", .380" lift (gross), 106 lobe centers
VW190, 225 degrees, .440", 108
VW200, 242 degrees, .441",106
VW205-10, 258 degrees, .470", 110
VW207, 264 degrees, .470", 110
VW 210, 286 degrees, .486", 110 (advance 4 degrees)

I don't see the VW20 listed...it could be slightly larger than the VW15. Let us know how it specs out!

Thanks Neil.

Do you know if the VW 15 would run with no problems with 1.25 rockers?

The engine is powerful as is. It has 9:1 cr 44idf webers 2275cc. The cam seems mild. It has plenty of grunt, especially midrange. The torque is so good, I never have to downshift to pass another car at 60 mph

The reason I am cinsidering the ratio rockers is because I have the engine hooked to a type three fully automatic tranny. First gear on this tranny is the same ratio as the second gear on a freeway flyer. So, off the line is good but I believe it could be better with the 1.25 rockers as long as they don't cause a problem. The torque converted helps by allowing the engine to rev a bit as it goes from stand still to moving along. Unfortunately, the stall on the converter is around 1400. So power braking off the line is not too much help. I really need a modified converter or one from a bus. The bus stall is 1900 or 2000

I have found the answer to the cam ID. I called Steve Long Racing today as they have all the cam info from Erson all the way back to the beginning of Erson. The sambe forum search function is a wonderful tool.

Steve was very gracious with his time. He researhed the info based on the info I could provide. Later he found more info and called to give me that info as well. Apparently he is a quality person.
So here it is.
Erson- "VW 20" now superseded by the name "VW 206"
233 duration @ 50
327 lobe height
106 lobe centers.

My research into this info was to find out if I can install Ratio Rokers. According to Steve, I can go as large as 1.4 rockers and be safe.

If anyone has any more info on the cam specs and how the ratios work into the picture, lease post (personal experience, thoughts as to expected performance, things I should be aware of before making the swap to 1.4 etc).
Thanks
