Has anyone put together a video or picture series that shows and explains how to make a rat rod, lowered, extended chopped etc?
When I finish my current project I'd like to do one with a type 4 engine.
Await your comments
Thanks

All I have ever had are rat rods but they are not too popular here on samba (based on the comments I get). If a type 4 engine is in the works, I suggest giving this site a visit periodically.

There are many other V-Rod sites but the one listed above is for guys who don't fuck around. These UK rodders make sparks fly in all kinds of directions. They also couldn't give a rats ass what others think.
Here's a sticky I created on the site on Chopping a Top. Very picture heavy.

Extended front kits are bolt on units but you can still get creative. They are only ONE way to deal with the front.
Get at least one extra roof for the chop. Sometimes this job boils down to doing it solo or with some help. |

I have always been one for originality, now its time for some creativity.
I keep looking at the front end set up and it different. I think Iwill not be able to be that creative. Maybe us a front extension bolt on piece first time around. Thanks for the photos, I will save them in my build folder.

Money, time, equipment and ability have the biggest effect on creativity.
I for one... can create, but dont have steady access to all the good tools to create..
Creating a Volksrod is not a cookie cutter process.... It is up to the artist/creator to invision its outcome.
Now there have been a few basic established "looks" that it seems most agree on.. Extended front axle, chopped top (but not required), lowered, rough or refined.. Each car seems to oooozze the personality of its owner/creator.. That's the way it should be. IMO.
A bolt on extender can easily be created, but its also, now, fairly reasonably priced due to some recent competition.
On my latest creation... I opted for a purchased bolt on front beam extender... I was under some pressure, to begin and have rolling, in 6 months or less... I made my deadline... in its pitted flat paint, chopped top glory..
vaughn bros got it right.. and will have your back... as will I. The key is dont screw around and do what you like......
check out volksrods.com... Lots of links to help you get started.

Here is one that has just got started.... He was making good progress, then on a break I guess.
That happens way too often.... ...

The UK volksrod site is pretty cool the volksrods.com site is not that great imo just a bunch of samba bashing about the samba bashing them. How does that make them any better lol. This site is getting more volksrod lovers which is really cool. Good luck with your build, Post some pics in the readers rides when you get a chance. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

Once you get some ideas on how - then seriously take the time to figure out what and why. Are you simply after a look or is this something you want to be able to drive. Also, take a cruise through the bastards and abotions thread to see many cases of what not to do.
Getting the right look is critical and some folks have a knack for it and a lot don't. There is a recent thread on a slightly mild rat rod that is absolutely amazing IMHO. The thing that made it was the color scheme. Not your usual primer and rust - a real nice 2 tone and it blows me away.
And I currently am working on a very unusual project for my wife. We go back and forth on a lot of the details and concepts. I play around with sketches, photoshops, etc a LOT to get a handle on the look. But this car will also be drive - not a lot, but its got to be totally roadworthy AND have heat. If it takes me another month or two till I get it nailed, that's fine - THEN I will start seriously building.
So - hopefully I gave you some things to think about and have a ball building! _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

F*ck the Purists! A rat-rod, Volksrod, etc. is still a VW, and what you do with your creativity only makes VW's more fun. How many people saved VW's from the crusher making Rat Rods? I, personally, love VW rat rods.
Whose "Stink Bug" is that? Very cool. Also love the lowered to the weeds, silver, chopped split. Whose is that? I saw the Vaughn Bros. gallery pics. Nice workmanship! _________________ Zenith Blue, black interior 1967 Volkswagens! |

Nothing wrong with building a rat rod style vehicle as long as you paint it and finish it. Rusted junk and leaving it primered is still a pile of junk no matter how much you polish your turd. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

I agree.... and it would thrive.
There are plenty of closet Volksrod admirers..., ,that are samba members, and samba lurkers. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

A volksrod forum would turn into another hoodride forum. I've been to V-8 Street Rod shows where they specifically said in their rules No Volksrods allowed. My big problem with them is the dumb assholes that think it is cool to drive a car on the streets with no front brakes. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK
