Thanks for the weight spec. Didn't easily see it on their webpage. I imagine the 10' square doesn't weigh *that* much more.

Thanks people. I may end up getting something like this:

I have a 10' EZ-Up, similar to what you've pictured. While I love it with the privacy and/or screen enclosures I added to it, I hate the room it takes up. While traveling I store it on the floor in front of the back seat.
Pro's: Easy to set up, stays set up while I'm out of camp, usually doesn't need to be staked.
Cons: Storage when not in use.

In a never ending quest to reduce my packed footprint I'm leaning towards trying one of these lightweight canopies.
Pro's: Stores very small
Con's: Flimsy, needs stakes, what do I do when we are out of camp?

As I see it, the major advantage is I could carry the little guy with me all the time.

True! And as WestiCoast said, there are uses for both. Why not have both.

My little guy is always ready to deploy!

I stow my $24 awning behind the rear seat along with the folding camping chairs, extra Coleman poles, and Mexican blanket.

Toss in some beers, etc into the frig and we are good to go bug out right away.

Beach is just a quick drive then.

Do that a lot.

I am a little underwhelmed by my Bus Depot awning cause it has so many bits and is sort of bulky.

I have never bothered with the canopy I have as it is too darn big....

I am keeping an eye out for an awning in a metal box, though but I refuse to the huge price the seem.

I've watching this thread for a bit looking for an awning that's a little more affordable. Decided to go with a Texport 10' x 10' with uv protection.

http://www.outdoorpros.com/Prod/Texsport-02903-10-...4/Cat/1549

$50 with shipping, will update when I receive it.

I have the full BusDepot awning and three sides to make the whole tent. It's very nice, stores under the bench seats but is not the easiest thing to get up and down. 5 in the family camping and it takes us all to get it up. We've used it enough to be able to get it up and down in under 10 minutes, but it's kind of a pain. At this point, I'd rather have something simpler. I dream on an awning that sticks to the Westy and just pulls out from it, like the big motor homes have. And then the three sides tucked under the seat if they're needed.

Black... why add heat to the equation, enough is captured in the domed portion.

Love mine that I bought last year...

Your's is different. Notice the corners. the "flap" corners on the kmart ones are a PITA since the canopy does not stay taught if not stretched on the uprights ( i have one I dont; use.). I like yours better. Info?

Curious if anyone has considered making a small hard case for an awning like this and mounting it to the van like a regular awning?

Basically you could anchor one corner of the awning inside the case, put the poles inside, then just deploy as needed.

Would have to come up with the right case. But it wouldn't be much different than having an expensive awning mounted all the time and would save the storage space inside.

Something like a "fishing pole case"?

That case in a 12" by 20feet used to hold ultra-lit air craft.- sounds like -PVC and 2 end caps bolted to the roof rack or across the bumper would be perfect.

Just finished my DIY awning. PVC tube cut in half, hinges, clasps, end caps, poles, homemade brackets, and a little paint to match my camper. Poles roll up in the tarp to travel. All under $50.

FWIW. Instead of running out guy lines, I use 10# dumbbell plates. I slide them on the poles then use the existing strings to hold them up off the ground a little. Seems to work pretty well. Unless you're in some strong winds then you'll have an awning and some 10# projectiles flying around Laughing

I like the weight thing. Often we use water jugs/buckets for that weight and they collapse/light in the bus. Nice for transporting extra water too Wink

Just went to Kmart today and bought mine. I had to cut off the front legs so it would fit in the drip rail of my bus, but other than that works fine. Not the best quality, but for $29.99 well worth it.
