Well...... That's one low cost option gone.

It seems that another often will arise with the "need".

Park and set the awning however you like...it also works well for staying dry!

Cool

Is it just me, or do the majority of photos of deployed shades on The Samba show the desired shady area to be actually in the sun? Looks like there is a sweet spot of the day for these to be useful. I'm not just being a smart butt. I'm thinking of some shade device at all levels of expenditure, and am really wondering how useful they really are, and therefore, how much to spend. I do like "cheap".

Cheers,

-Karl

I was reading this thread and decided to check out my local Kmart. Turns out they had this same (newer version) canopy on sale for $29.99. I l had to modify 2 off the poles (grind the long extension off) and use a couple of spring clamps to clamp it to the van. I used the extra 2 guide lines to help further secure the front side of the canopy. After returning from a weekend trip at the beach I am very impressed with how well it assembles and how well it stores. There were also some pretty high winds at points and the awning held strong.

Got mine today, current sale ends tomorrow

edit: Judging by the earlier pics in the thread the one I got is a better design, the fabric pockets for the tent poles have been replaced metal sockets attached to the frame.

Looks like I'll have to chop the legs off of 2 corners if I want it to sit in the rain gutter though.

Just went to Kmart today and bought mine. I had to cut off the front legs so it would fit in the drip rail of my bus, but other than that works fine. Not the best quality, but for $29.99 well worth it.

That's some slick work right there...right down to the custom hardware.
Are you a professional fabricator by trade? Sweet!

I like the weight thing. Often we use water jugs/buckets for that weight and they collapse/light in the bus. Nice for transporting extra water too Wink

FWIW. Instead of running out guy lines, I use 10# dumbbell plates. I slide them on the poles then use the existing strings to hold them up off the ground a little. Seems to work pretty well. Unless you're in some strong winds then you'll have an awning and some 10# projectiles flying around Laughing

That case in a 12" by 20feet used to hold ultra-lit air craft.- sounds like -PVC and 2 end caps bolted to the roof rack or across the bumper would be perfect.

Curious if anyone has considered making a small hard case for an awning like this and mounting it to the van like a regular awning?

Basically you could anchor one corner of the awning inside the case, put the poles inside, then just deploy as needed.

Would have to come up with the right case. But it wouldn't be much different than having an expensive awning mounted all the time and would save the storage space inside.

Something like a "fishing pole case"?

Black... why add heat to the equation, enough is captured in the domed portion.

Love mine that I bought last year...
