Haven't found anything via various searches. Given that VW dropped the 20- and 1- numbering at the end of 1955 other than tin, air cleaner etc, are there any differences between a bug and bus 36 hp engine/case from 1956 on - or were they essentially interchangeable? Tech section shows the same month ending serial numbers for both bug & bus.

The engine cases were the same and there is no way to tell just with the case what they were installed. on. Some of the fittings can hint at their former placemtnt but since these can be easily removed and transferred from engine to engine there is no absolute certainty.

some hints leading to 36hp bus fitment:

triangle bracket behind coil when mounted to fan shroud
carburetor with plug in vacuum port
mechancial advance distributor
side mount air filter and bracket to fan as in Ghia
crank start pulley nut
single tip muffler with short pipe

I guess if all of the above were present on the same engine you could take bets...

There are some exceptions. I have a M 178 36 hp bus engine. In addition to the above it has a speed governor, 211 short neck intake manifold, short carburetor brace and a fan shroud with the M 178 code stamped on it in ink. These were only bus installed items so the odds are increased in this case.
