I did not see this thread back in September. Bala brought it to my attention. I'm in the process of cleaning my pop top on my 78 Westy and I noticed this in the front passenger rain gutter.
If you looked at it from the outside edge of the bus instead of from the top, as the picture was taken, the VW would be upside down but the stamp off to the side looks like it would read 5 on top and then 78 below. Makes sense because I believe my bus was built in May of 78 and left the factory in June. I'll check the birth certificate when I get home. But here is another example of VW date stamping buses in the rain gutter. _________________ 1978 Delux Campmobile

I left the original gutter in place with some of the roof...I trimmed the outer lip off of the gutter of the new roof and plug welded the new roof gutter into the old roof gutter. Cut a line across front door post to front door post and welded across. NOTE gutter and roof are 1 peice
thanks to babysnakes for the metal

That's a thing of beauty. I get a kick out of it when I work on my '05 Passat TDI, as there are similar stamps all over the car and in the most obscure places. It is no doubt the mark of the Black Forest dwarves. _________________ *****************

Nice! I need to go check mine again. It's a bit crusty, so there's a chance a little scrubbing could reveal a date stamp. _________________ 1976 Westy

That's awesome, I wish I had seen this diagram before I hacked away at my roof. I never realized how many 'baffles' there are in the roof and pillars. The work is now done and one of these days I will update my other thread... _________________ 1979 Westy Auto

just checked mine last night and even after sandblasting and fresh paint (lots of it), you can still make out the VW stamp. Same place - front passenger side. I think I found it cooler than the wife. I showed her and she was confused as to what the big deal was. Oh well. . . _________________ '78 Deluxe Westy - Loose Lucy (where I rest peacefully)

I was looking at some of my older pictures and I noticed something on my sending unit.
A date stamp. 5 78

Many, many things have a date stamp: Aux Air Regulators, Voltage Regulators, Double Relays, Tail light Lenses, and Fuel Sending Units, to name just a few. Most plastic parts have a date stamp as well, but they often use the circle with an arrow pointing at a number between 1 and 12 around the outer perimeter, and with the year code in the middle of the circle. _________________ *****************

You need to dream bigger....like lottery winnings and early retirement. Date codes? Not so much. _________________ *****************

Yup. Skip one word and change the entire meaning:
"I found it cooler than the wife (did)."
I can only assume that we read it right. _________________ *****************

Oops! Yes, it is amazing how one word can really change the intended meaning (or was it just a Freudian slip . . .?)! Thanks for catching that and saving my marriage.
Unfortunately for the date stamp (but fortunately for the ongoing life of my bus) the sandblasting and paint job obscured the date stamp. If I look really hard, I can see that it was there, but it is not legible by my eyes. But I was happy that the VW stamp was still there - barely visible, but definitely visible. _________________ '78 Deluxe Westy - Loose Lucy (where I rest peacefully)
