i removed the dash on my 1974 super beetle and didn't label any of the wires, i haves looked at the wiring schematic and it may as well be Chinese. I do not understand it at all. i need to get my speedometer and light switches working do i can at least drive it to another location. currently none of the lights work. all were working properly before i removed the dash. I have order the custom dash for glass-action and will be install it and using the stock speedometer but will be putting in custom switches for the lights and A/C and whatever else is needed, but need to know which wires go where. PLEASE HELP!!!

Here's some pictures I took of the wiring going to the back of my Speedo before I removed it.
It's not much but at this point every little bit may help.

Did you happen to look at the How To Read a 73 and Up Wiring Diagram?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bug_howtoread_73up.jpg

They really aren't hard unless you are color blind.

Don't get overwhelmed by it, it's all A to A and B to B type stuff.

It wou help if you print the diagram out in color so you can mark it as you progress.

This one has text labels. The European edition, but the speedo is the same. You want to look at the unit called K, thats the speedo.

Just take your time and work systematically.

i found the wiring diagram for the beetle to be relatively easy to decipher.

if it confuses you a little....
use a sheet of paper to make a LIST of the wires, color code and what it goes to/from.
next, compare the list to the schematic. draw out a rough sketch of the dash and accessories. in sections if you need to.
label the terminals and corresponding colored wires.

using that method along with photos and other drawn diagrams who have forded these waters before you, and you should slowly have it reassembled.

Once you figure out what you're looking at, the late model wiring diagram is not that hard.

That being said, I'm an electronics tech, been reading schematics for almost 35 years and those wiring diagrams are the most screwed up diagrams I have ever seen.

I thought I'd mention that the trio of lights in this pic are missing a wire. That unused spade that connects to all three bulb holders should have a wire connected to it. Depending on your model year it could be a black or a green wire that is powered from the ignition switch (12v+). Early years may not have been fuse protected. Since this power source is shared by all three indicator bulbs each of the wires that run to the bulb holders goes to a ground source (alternator, oil pressure switch or flasher relay).
