Welcome to The Wild Westerner Club Established September 10, 2012

The purpose of this Exclusive Club is to located all remaining Wild Westerners and save them from extinction. Since our start we have had many to debate the rumor that it was produced either in association with The Spokane Worlds Expo in 1974, or as a sales promotion using the colors of the expo. As of yet no conclusion has determined as to the creation. Most if not all were imported into the West Coast of The United States and were only produced in April and May of 1973. This Special Edition Transporter was exclusively manufactured for The U.S. market only. Many have bought over the past few years and shipped to Canada, Germany, Mexico, Portugal, The Netherlands, and The United Kingdom.

We have approximately 64 known Wild Westerners located and documented to date (5-1-18.)and have a list of approximately 27 that have been sighted. More unknown Wild Westerners pop up almost every month for sale, or on various social media.

We have a wonderful group of Owners and Contributors that have banded together to help locate and save these critters. We need your help as well, please join us by looking at all m-code plates on all 1973 VW Transporters for a specific set of numbers (736). Many have been repainted different colors or customized over the years therefore the m code plate is the true identifying mark. Check m code plates at car shows, salvage yards, parking lots and or transporters sitting around rusting away in fields or home-sites. (ask permission first).

Each month we will post an updated list of owners on this forum. Our goal is to have at least one Wild Westerner in every state by May 1, 2023.

Thanks to all that have helped and those who will help find and save these Magical Mystery Machines.

secretsub,
I believe the Wild Westerner designation was coined by a dealer, it isn't official VW. Doesn't matter what they are called, though I don't get the western connection from the paint job, do you?

Most buses bearing these colors have had a Safare Custom Campers conversion. How many non-campers do you know of with that paint job?

So, saving Safares is also saving Wild Westerners. I think it would make sense to make the Safares....Where are they? thread a combined thread, like, Safares/Wild Westerners...post here, please.

What do you and anyone else think about that?

cheers, Buscuss

I don't think I have ever seen one that WAS a camper, at least not in person. I have seen several Wild Westerner passenger buses, though.

I think it would be best kept all in this thread, below.

I have to agree, aside from Buscuss' I think I recall one other on Ebay once, at least a couple dozen stationwagons though.

Maybe ask Ev to retitle the thread Eric linked although I see nothing wrong with it as is.

Yep, turquoise color. And turquoise is the valuable mineral and gem of the Southwest. And the Southwest is the Wildwest and the home of the last of the wild Westerners. We're talking Arizona, and portions of Nevada and New Mexico. 30 years ago Wall Street Journal billed Scottsdale AZ as the last town of the Wildwest. Our great Sheriff Joe and legislation legalizing carrying handguns in bars help maintain the tradition.
The color turquoise is common in the SW architecture as well as turquoise being most dominent in SW Native American Indian jewelry and art.
As far as AC buses, well they are kinda' a remnant of the wild past Laughing Totally different than whatever color would be associated with East Coast City Slickers Razz

Now maybe it's my aging eyes but I'm not seeing the turquoise Confused
I was under the impression the WW was some sort of dealer special order to coincide with or promote the worlds fair in Spokane WA, the greens (that's what I see) do sortof represent the agriculture of the area and since it's not east of the mississipi I guess it's the "wild west". Spokane still has rattlesnakes, hot summers and mean spiders and there may have been the odd outlaw pass through the area so it's plausible IMO Smile No doubt VW didn't play favorites and happily delivered buses with the special paint package to any dealer who ordered one.

Regardless I hate it when these threads get bumped as a WW is on my bucket list, the last decent one close by came up at a time of thinnner than normal wallet and I'm still kicking myself Crying or Very sad

No wild westerners started life as campers. Many sat in dealer lots due to the colors and were deeply discounted to get them sold. Even in the 70's the westerner was too abnormal to be a hot seller. Many were repainted before they left the lot, others were sold at deep discount to conversion companies and made into campers.

All wild westerners started out as black interior station wagons. Safare and asi only got ahold of some of these because the price was right.

They were officially labeled wild westerner by vw as a line item sales code upcharging 75.00 for the package.

You will not find history of this bus existing. There are no paint codes anywhere on bus, the space for it on the m-plate is blank. You'll find the colors used as 73-74 beetle codes apfel grun, and revenna grun.

The wild westerner is an enigmatic machine. I will continue to do what I can to amass knowledge and be an ambassador of wild westernery goodness.

The theory that the WW was a special order package for the World's Fair has been debunked, partially because the fair was a year after the package came out.

You're probably right since I've never seen a Wild Westerner Bay in person.
This is the only thing I based my opinion and SWAG guess on.

Looks somewhat close to me unless Buscuss's picture color is off. But I do see his has more green. Now if we're talking real turquoise frequently it is real greenish, sometimes very blueish.
As far as the Wild West, well there is the West and then there is the Wild West. I wouldn't want to disagree with the good old boys down in Tombstone. Laughing

Possibly, but I'm not fully convinced yet.
Having experienced both a worlds fair and Olympics here in Vancouver the lead up years to the event far exceed the actual event. After the initial media whining about displaced low income unfortunates and economic doom that it'll bring the mood turns to happy optomism in the last 18 months, a few well written letters to VW by a gung ho dealer with all the rah!, rah!, the world is coming!, blah, blah, golden opportunity, what a party!, we'll all be rich! bandwagon hype that everyone climbs onto could have swayed the color gurus to offer a SE. Not saying it's fact but my dad thought like the stereotypical car salesman (quite sucessfully too) and it's something I can imagine him doing in a heartbeat, jump on the hype while the jumping's good! And why was it seemingly only delivered "out west"?

Good points, but why wouldn't it then have been called the "Expo Edition" or something like that?

Plus, the colors don't really match with the Expo 74 color scheme. If the bus was meant to be an option directly related to the Expo, I would expect them to match the color scheme more closely.

Some folks here are just guessing at the true origin of the color scheme. Hopefully this will lead to the actual history. I have seen many transporters with this paint scheme and maybe 1 safari so i feel it is so that they maybe were repainted. Anyone having any knowledge of the serial numbers of the numbers and or a source to find the history of these buses please contact me. Currently i"m restoring one and feel these buses should be kept alive. Bill [email protected]

mannys your bus looks almost new compared to the one I'm restoring. So keep me informed as to the progress. As for myself I'm gonna make this a beach cruiser complete with a super long surfboard on top, Dead Head and other stickers. And if you decide to part with it let me know. Tks Bill

secretsub,
I believe the Wild Westerner designation was coined by a dealer, it isn't official VW. Doesn't matter what they are called, though I don't get the western connection from the paint job, do you?

you believe wrong
