I had to laugh, reading the description for that bus, written by someone who clearly does not understand VW buses. For example, they said that the sliding door does not close flush. I'm willing to bet that they do not know how to close a '73 sliding door. You have to pull UP on the handle after it closes to lock it into place. I always found that move so satisfying.

They also misspelled "Ravenna", and overlooked the color of the blue stripe, which is Olympia Blue.

$25k, though. Not too shabby.

Road Trip

Broadening my search for Wild Westerners.

Headed North to the Great State of Pennsylvania.

Does anyone have a clue what part of Pennsylvania Samba Member 69 Busboy resides. I'm trying to locate him to see what happened to The Wild Westerner rolling chassis he owned seems like 8 years ago.

I am on the move so anyone knowing of salvage yards and or peoples yards that need to be checked East of the Mississippi please contact me.

Thankyou
Cousins

anyone here know Gabe, is Gabe here?

full article
https://indoek.com/article/surf-shacks-046-gabe-sullivan/
Quote:
Most surfers know Mr. Sullivan, with his iconic green VW van, as “Curious Gabe” from his column in Surfer Magazine that ran in every single issue for 18 years straight. The column featured Gabe asking a new question of his fellow surfers on the street (or in the water) every issue. These were not the pros that graced the pages of the rest of the magazine, they were the everyday surfers you’d see at various lineups all over the world giving short responses to timely and often irreverent surf questions. Gabe became a symbol of the common surfer in the pre-internet era. He now spends his time doing freelance photography, videography, and writing while living with his beautiful family in picturesque Laguna Beach.

How is Gabe's WW a low-light pre-73 bay? It looks original.

The stripes are not Wild Westerner correct. Though they look like they've been there a long time.

Perhaps...

This bus was the inspiration for the Wild Westerner, though? Someone owned it when it was new or very new and had it repainted in the beautiful green and blue tones to their own liking. Perhaps the owner was the planning committee Chairman for the then-upcoming World's Fair.

Meanwhile, the PNW area dealerships were disappointed that VW hadn't secured official licensing and had gotten together to try to hatch up a plan to sell a few new Buses while taking advantage of the excitement of the World's Fair. While they were meeting, the Chairman brought his Bus into the dealership for a valve adjustment and oil change, and the dealership execs saw it and said "Aha!" And a call to Hannover was made to order a couple hundred of them.

I dunno, but it's an 'inspiration' piece no matter if the egg came before the chicken.

and as long and well 'loved' as it is, it could (should?) be at the least an Honorary WW

and who knows maybe this was the chicken that laid the egg.

it's a 72 fwiw.. low lights in front large tails in back.

one year only body

To me they look pretty much the same - maybe placed a tad low.

This bus is actually very interesting. Maybe the WW package was available earlier than we think? I wonder if there are more 72's?

If someone could get Gabe to provide the paint codes, we could see if it is original.

Before this gets out of hand .
In 2012 0r 2013 we debated Gabe and his 72 VW Bus lookalike Wild Westerner and we came to the conclusion he or someone painted a 72 to look like a Wild Westerner.
This is why I highly suggest anyone buying a Wild Westerner check the m code plate for verification.

All True Wild Westerners were built in April and May of 1973.

Not trying to be a party pooper but That's the Facts Jack.

Peace Out !

It would be nice to confirm via the M-Plate. If that was painted to look like a WW, it was done a long time ago, and pretty accurately. Facts require solid evidence.

that's not entirely out of the realm of possibilities.
my buddies Orange Bay has a very blue base paint underneath..
closer looks is the entire front clip was 'grafted' on at sometime in the very distant past... brazed on over torch cut sheet metal.

Update Wild Westerner:
Beaver, Pennsylvania
I talk to an owner of a Foreign Car Repair Facility who says that he has on a few occasions seen a green VW bus with a yellow top. He also told me he will try and flag the driver down the next time he sees him and ask the driver to contact me.
I feel pretty confident this is or was the Wild Westerner 69BUSBOY owns or owned.

Hopefully, we will get confirmation soon.

Cousin my Cousin....
Hats off to you and of those fine people who have saved a Wild Westerner from death. If you could send a picture of the m code plate located behind the drivers seat we can add it to our member list. In addition we will headline the auction on our member list and post it as we get new members or changes. If you pm a mailing address I will gladly forward free of charge certification decals for your Wild Westerner.

In other news the clock on the wall says its time to go. After almost 9 years as ringleader I feel it is time to pass the baton to a young blood. I have thought long and hard and I hope this does not anger anyone for we have many eligible candidates but I would like to nominate Dave Cook as President and Chairman of the Board (i love Beach Music I always have and I always will)
That is if he is willing to accept this position.
A) He has had a Wild Westerner for many years and has posted the most pictures (I Believe)
B) He is just a darn nice guy.

With as many Wild Westerners located and more popping up from time to time this club should never die.

I do not plan to go anywhere as stated I feel someone younger should carry on.

Mucho-Grass-ee-ass
