|
|
Hey all,
So I just got my first Westy, and one of my fond memories from my first time in a Westy as a child was the charming melody coming from the dashboard when the key was placed in the ignition. I was looking forward to hearing this upon every startup of my new (to me) van, but it doesn't actually work in this particular Vanagon. I just checked all the fuses tonight and replaced two which were fried, but still the chime is missing.
Do all Vanagons have this ignition chime? Only certain years? Should my 89 Westy have a chime?
Thanks for your input! |

You are probably missing the black square chime (looks like a relay) _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

The chime should be in your car. People often pull the chime and yours mqy be missing. They plug into a socket they clips onto the top of the fuse box. |

yup, one for me of the single most annoying things in a car, anything that beeps or chimes
i rewire them so they have a decent use, telling me that the door is open, orsum
telling me that i could accidentally leave the lights on, now it's worth something _________________ lucy our westy

The key chime a true idiot box IMO, consider yourself luck your system no longer works. I agree with Rubbachicken, there are a lot of better uses for the chime than needlessly telling you your key is in the ignition. |

Geez guys, way to rain on someone's memory of what makes the Vanagon such a special vehicle, no matter how much you may not see it the same way. I am not a big fan of the chime either, but it sounds like the original poster really misses it's input.
The part number for the chime is 321 919 433 B. As luck would have it, there is one listed in the classifieds right now:

If you can't get the chime from the ad, let me know and I am sure that I can dig one up for the same price. _________________ Jay Brown

There is a vanagon meet in south city on Sat. There may be someone attending that has one for you.
It is a nice informal meet where people just hang out and shoot the breeze.

If I am able to get out of working on Sat I have one that I can give you. |

Ditto; but it happens every time the chime relay is mentioned. Some folks out there simply enjoy hearing their vehicles sing Volks-wa-gen to them; nothing wrong with that. My Cabriolet still has its chime relay in place; I promptly ripped it out of my van though.

All VWs of the same era (mid-'80s to through the '90s) use the same relay. Another option is to head to your local junkyard. One place you definitely don't want to go: your VW dealer ($110!! ). _________________ ~Kamz

When you find one, you can wire it to work as a "you left your lights on" warning. _________________ 1988 Vanagon

Charming melody???
My 85 (which I believe to be totally original, I think there is German air in the tires ) has a nails on chalkboard buzzer if the keys are in the ignition and the door opened. Is that the situation under discussion?
hard to believe that brings back happy memories |

OK, when we got our van it was our first VW and I had never heard that chime before. It was just another one of the strange and wonderful qualities of this unfamiliar vehicle. I soon became annoyed by it like everyone else and removed it. That was two years ago. Recently I found a thread describing repurposing it as a headlights on warning, so I did that.
To my surprise, there was a moment of fond recognition when the chime was heard again. I like it as a headlights on warning signal. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

The truly sick, like me, use a different buzzer out of another VAG product to get a different sound.
I have a small collection of them.
My problem is my switch contacts do not always work right and it does not always chime...... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Up to 1985, the door buzzer was exactly that: "Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz". Beginning in late '85 or for the '86 model year, the Volks-wa-gen song was introduced and stuck around up through the A2 chassis era. The A3s got a song that's even worse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SCs4HKgDrk . _________________ ~Kamz

My 81 has the brain splitting buzzer that goes off when you open the door with the key in. Luckily I rarely open the door with the keys in and it also doesn't work most of the time. I think it's a wiring issue. Is my style a relay as well? Are the two interchangeable? _________________ 1981 Westfalia |

Shoot, I never heard that one. I've got an '85 and found a relay sitting in the glove box. Probably the buzzing type. Anyway, after a couple years at the bottom of the box I threw it in another box in the garage. Haven't seen it since. But I kinda like that sound. I'd throw it in. _________________ '85 Westy |

Weird. I've got a Canadian '91 GL Camper and it's a bastard of a buzzer. My wife wants to kill it.
Anyone have a friendly chiming one that they're not using and willing to part with? I'm hoping to re-wire as a headlights-left-on notifier, but man it'd be way more pleasant if it didn't remind me of an alarm clock I once turned off with a hammer...
*edit* just saw the ad link... I'll be pursuing that one if the OP doesn't grab it... |
