I currently own a '66 and had a '65 before. Both have cool full over rider bumpers.
I was wondering what year those started? I know earlier Bugs (esp. ovals) have smaller bumpers with the two "bump stop" things but not the full over rider bars.
Or was it an option on some years?
I'm sure someone here has the full story.

Overrider bumpers is kinda a slang word for those bumpers, they are US spec. bumpers. April of 1955 was when they started on US spec cars. European cars never had overrider style bumpers. So had your 66 or 65 been European it would have had European style bumpers with just the blade and two "bumper gaurds".

Thanks Trayle.
I like the look of the U.S. spec bumpers.
Are European bumpers considered more desireable?

IMHO, US Spec bumpers (with overriders) are much better than Euro bumpers because they have all that extra chrome! Chrome = Cool

I like US spec. bumpers too. They have alot of extra chrome. But I run what the car is supposed to have. I cant see a car with semaphores with US spec bumpers. Same as a 58(for example) without semaphores looks silly with European bumpers. But thats just me. Im not gonna be like Der Winkermister and say what you should or shouldnt do. They both look good.

Bumpers with overriders could be ordered as optional equipment before they became standard in late April 1955. Same goes with the dual filament taillights and bullet turnsignals which were changed over in May 55.

Yeah, I like my bumpers. I think they are maybe the coolest thing about the whole car:

Is there a name(slang or otherwise) for that extra bar that is bolted on to the bumper gaurds?

And those push bars are OG. Probablem have GTVI(or something like that) marked on the back side of one of the corners. Although they are mounted alittle lower than you usually see. Still sweet.

i like the look of the euro style bumpers. they used to be very popular.

i also like the red/amber taillights (62-67). us cars came with all red. for the early peanut blinkers (58-63), euros were amber and us were clear. Smile

Trayle, that's still one of my fave cars of all time. I have the Volks World with that on the cover...
If I remember correctly, it was also in Trends but after Roman bought it?
