thought this would be of interest to you folks.
it appears to be a 78 Champagne Edition Riviera camper
questions:
i'm pretty sure that is a real CE, but how do i tell if it is a "factory" Riviera and not a PO install?
did VW even release CEs for camper install?
or could it have been done post-purchase?
i can't find any rivi ID tags; not that i'd know where to look for them
it's in the typical shape you would expect:
minor body damage, roached rubber, interior "customization" & a little torn up, small tear in top tent, missing fridge & coleman aux heater, a supposedly tired engine w/ a progressive.
been used, but not abused.
the bumpers are there and straight though.
and it's an AZ bus w/ very little rust _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Wow, that is very cool. I think Riv converted whatever they could get their hands on, pre and post consumer. IIRC, only original paperwork would tell the true story. Busdaddy knows a fair bit about camper conversions of different flavors. _________________ *****************

If I'm not mistaken, the photo showing the passenger side has the little metal tag that were put on campers. There'll be a clue there. It's in the middle stripe directly down from the handle, below the door. |

the two tags below the door are the CA RV tag & the LP gas cert tag.
no Rivi tag. _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Did ASI use the same Manchester propane tanks as Westfalia? That tank sure looks like the ones on the Westies. _________________ 1963 Ruby Red 356 Cabriolet

I was thinking the exact same thing, but Manchester pretty much had the market on tanks cornered, so it is very possible that they used the same tank. I'm sure there is a Riv thread somewhere that could speak to this topic.
The rear curtain has been Mickey Moused, and leaves me wondering whether this was a PO conversion. The CE would have been a passenger bus, and a likely conversion for a PO that wanted a camper. _________________ *****************

My 78 Riv has the metal bulkhead behind the driver and passenger front seats.
And Rivs aren't fugly! They may be bugly but not fugly. I used to not want a Riv but mine has grown on me. Like a fungus. _________________ If you only have one tool in your tool box, and it's a hammer, pretty soon, everything looks like it needs to be whacked!
