I have a chance to buy an unstamped 36HP factory crate engine. This was bought from the VW dealer years, and years ago and has been stored since. I really don't have a use for this and am considering selling it. Can I get some ideas on value ?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a one of a kind item, so the right person will pay whatever you want for it.. but you might wait a looooong time to find that person. Realistically, if you can verify the source, and that it is in perfect internal shape, I would imagine someone might pay 25-50% more than the cost of a top of the line rebuild. I would change the valve springs if they've been sitting with the rockers on for so long, and maybe check inside the cylinders with a borescope to insure it's all nice and cross hatched clean..

Is it the entire engine or just a case?
When you say crate is it in a factory crate?

The last bare unstamped NOS 36hp engine case I saw was $1000... I think someone bought it too but I don't know the actual sales value.

So obviously more than that if it's a full engine.
I would guess at least double.

It depends on the condition. The last crate engine I saw (40hp) had some visible rust and I am sure needed to be disassembled and looked over, at a minimum.

Not the best photo but the crate could look something like this

Funny that I chose your photo. Smile

Anyway, post some more good photos of the engine inside - that may help.

I'm waiting to go see everything these people have and when I do I'll take pics and get more details. For now all I know is that all the parts were purchased in the 60's and they have been collecting parts since then, new from VW and older parts from cars, for all the different configs of VW's. I don't want to say too much cause I might jinx it....you know , like calling a no hitter too early in the ninth.
