you should be able to adjust the gap by loosen the set screw on the side of the blinker assembly and moving it closer to the wheel.

you may also check distance the steering tube is exiting under the fuel tank.

you can loosen the 2 mounting screws and twist the column tube thus closingthe gap between the blinker assembly and wheel.

What would happen other than loosening the unit up if I remove screw? Mine has a stripped head and want to replace it.

You mean the set screw? It's not removable... or it's not supposed to be. On the other side it is crimped onto a contact plate:

FYI - If you cant adjust it enough - the steering shaft length can be adjusted at the steering coupler - that T that slides into the steering shaft at the coupler and be slid in and out, but a lot of times the clamp is rusted pretty well. Also the outer colmn and be slid back and forth. You loosen the 2 bolts on the support under the dash and then you need to slide the rubber bushing back or forth (keep in mind that there is a seal at the firewal as well.

....thanx for the info, good to know. My main problem is the cross point screw head is stripped. Hoping to take my 'dremel' and slotting head for common screw driver.

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. It saved me hours of headache. I had the same 1" gap between my turn signal switch and steering wheel. I thought I had a weird steering wheel or mismatched parts. I loosened the two steering column bolts as sugessed and pulled the tube toward the steering wheel closing the gap. I just rebuilt the turn signal switch and now with the gap closed, the self canceling works. Thx all!
