I don't know who is supposed to be wondering here, but I do know that grove was a deep one--forget it--your digging a big hole you won't be able to seal--& JB weld is NOT a good wear surface for any seal.

Where do you guys come up with this stuff?
The Krakow school of Engineering?

I think this process for a real shallow grove might work--
However, in this case the grove was too deep in that hub to expect the seal to seal after it was spun outa there & clean.

I can't believe this actually was printed--Live.

What the heck is wrong with a simple wear ring, which is at the most a 2 minute resurfacing job?

I'd say this was an honerable effort, But--until you figure out how much you took off of that wear surface--and to get a seal to fit properly , you were just playing around polishing out that gaff mark & making dead batteries on that drill.

pretty comfortable right now.

FYI, I called GW today...they are expediting my new FW o-ring
& I should be putting this all back together this weekend.

Just saying---

If you had a Micrometer in the picture with some sound "before" and then "after" figures--I'd have to say Rube Goldberg doesn't have anything on you guys on turning apparatus---

However, seeing as your not in with & along a Smokey Yunik,Fireball Roberts, or Dyno Don Nickelson's eye balling machinest capacity, I am pretty confident your going to have some post nasal drip on that seal.
You took some off--what's going to take up the slack in the clearance?
The stock seal??

If this wasn't your flywheel, then why the hell show it? There's the real risk that one of the Great Unwashed is going to think that this hunky-fucked approach to polishing the seal surface is going to be able to buff out a groove similar to the one in the photo.

Look, overhanging 15 lbs. of flywheel on a 1/4 inch shank chucked into a battery-powered drill is not the way to go. The poster's claim that he removed a couple thousands of material is dubious at best. Even with a workpiece solidly mounted in a lathe, it takes some real pressure to file in a 1/2 thousand so I doubt that this shoe shine job did much more than polish off some built-up varnish. If somehow he did manage to remove that much meat with this method, he also ruined the flywheel

There's no need for this "craftsmanship of risk" approach - if you have a grooved seal surface, take it to an auto machinist and then pull out your Chicago Rawhide catalog to make sure you can get an oversized seal to fit or else tell the machinist to press on a Redi-Sleeve.

Sorry for the trouble, boys - I'll edit out the photo if it'll get you off each others backs. Rolling Eyes

I just put it up as a reference for the other flywheel noobs out there (like me).
If I can, I'll replace it with more specific specifics - but like I said, I didn't get a picture
and I don't own a micro-anything, other than a set of feeler gauges and a good sense
of what I can and cannot do. From 10c's description, I decided this is something I can do.

Bottom line, TK: 10c HAS posted on this process a number of times over the years.
Nothing hidden, no secrets...a piece of advice; a suggestion.

I just picked it up & ran with it., so forgive me (but thanks for mentioning my cojones).

If being a Troll equates to doing the job right ---so be it, and the title taken with a deep bow.

I have never seen heard, or experience a group of folks who seem to be in a tailspin most of their lives on a mission to hack up and complicate a relativly simple task.

I can see just polishing the hub up--but resizing it without getting some measurements first?
No way.

And if the Dime is a proponent and instigator of this plumber's taped down drill lathe techinque--Well---this just sez a bunch to me how he is the allegid Master of engine builder's.
Shoe maker--Maybe---

And all for the sake of the price of a wear ring and the proper seal installed.
I can't imagine being that destitude over a 30 buck part.

You gotta be kidding me.

If ths was an easy task to replace the seal a couple of times once it got chewed up & leaked, I'd say go for it.
But it sure isn't, and I sure don't know why in the hell you guys choose to take the low road again, & again.

Cob away Vanagon Tribe.

Cutting that hub on the pottery wheel is great idea--plenty of pumice attached & slung on it to it to use to burnish it all up nice & shiney once you've taken too much off.

Perhaps a new addition to the Sticky Arena should be added;

Way to go T.K. Thought you had mellowed out over the past few months. Your messages have been mild and informative. Glad the old T.K. is back with a lot of good information, sarcasm, and ribbing of others. I hope everybody understands that you are just being you and you mean no harm to others.
