Common' guys--
Cutting an engine sealing area on a pottery wheel?
No measuring devise of any kind required?
Fred Flntstone techniques are sill in vouge in Vanagonland I guess.
for example;
The same sort of seal is used on the floating hubs of the drive axles & trailer axles of semi's.
The hubs are full of oil to keep the bearings cooler, and last longer.
They ride on the axle hub, which looks exactly like the hub on that flywheel, and uses a CR seal inside of the wheel hub.
I've burnished a bunch of them to clean them up, and give a week or two either way--they always come back pissing gear oil all over inside of the wheels & tires.
I have two choices;
Call the axle surgeon who cuts off the stub axle off the main axle, and welds a new one on there, or order a CR wear ring & approriate seal to fit.
The axle surgeon costs $900.00 per stub axle, the new wear ring & seal costs $58.00.
This is no brainer, and is a simple task.
Just as it would be for the flywheel hub--wham, bam, it's all brand new.
For the long term end result's of this unsavory job ( spliting the trans from the engine etc.)
I wouldn't give the wear ring a second thought--just do it, and be done with it.
It's one hell of a better idea that cutting up the hub into the unknown, and just slapping a stock seal back in there that may leak pretty quick.
How bout for the hack' Sticky--

I suppose you're not gonna like my DIY flywheel lock, either...
PS: Before install, I tested the new seal on the refinished flywheel...nice and snug...

If you had done that job In Kelly Lake it would have been done better.
I should have known this was a Finlander approach-- _________________ T.K. |

I don't know if was the STP glue---

Ya' Sure.
I knew I was close as soon as I saw the way the chain was hung--
Plus seeing as you are up on the Range do what ya gotta do.
You could have used dividing rods to measure the clearance between that hub & the seal prior to stuffing the flywheel
in the hole--been a lot closer than eye balling the job.

Back from the dead...
Finally finished this job (clutch, all related seals & CV's) & I've now run the rig ~250 miles.
Went under to snug CV bolts and all looks good...no leaks, no drips, no embarassing wetness.
Oil change today & I'll put it away for the winter.
See ya in the spring! _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Update:
Now 4000 trouble-free miles, and still "no leaks, no drips, no embarrassing wetness"...
Could it be that 10cent was right...??? Only time will tell! See you next year!

Thanks for that update.
I had a good laugh reading this thread.
Good to see pics of wear and get a better idea of what's going on between the flywheel and engine oil seal. I had no idea the seal would wear the crank. Figured it'd be the other way 'round. Another thing to check on the flywheel.

Thanks for the follow-ups Dave. Just shows you can whine and wave your hands about, or be some obsessed safety scold treating mature adults like children, or you can STFU and do the frackin' job. I like people in the latter category.
Dabaron, if you're not sure about your groove being too deep, go ahead and sand it out, it costs only a little time. Then test fit your seal onto the hub, you'll be able to tell if the lip has to expand a bit to fit the hub. You can also shorten the lip tension spring about 1/8 - 3/16" to increase lip pressure a bit. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:
