I had a 1971 deluxe that I drove 400,000 miles. Really wanted to buy a new bus but 1978 and 1979 were bad for me financially due to a divorce. 1980 and 1981 were very good and with money in pocket I considered a new Vanagon. Just never could get over the way it looked. Too American. It is like seeing the coupes and 4 doors on the freeway today - they are all look alike - and every owner I interviewed back then said they would never do a Vanagon again. I've seen one nice one here in town that I would own but in all the years that was the only one. But .......... clean bays are getting more expensive and harder to find.

Vanagons certainly weren't very popular when new. With all the water leaks, an underpowered engine that started to fail around 60,000 miles, high parts prices and very poor parts availability and people were just about giving them away once they were 3, 4, or 5 years old. Luckily the typical rebuilt engine last better than the original and a decent aftermarket parts network has grown up to keep them going.
