transmission problem

Just my bug running again after about 15 years.I have some type of transmission problem,Sometimes i am able to find 1st and 2nd gear and other times 3 and 4th gear are where 1st and 2 nd should be located? Help!

Have you installed a new shift coupler?

Check if the shift rod bushing and the shift rod coupler are worn.

I did take the shifter out put in a new carpet kit.

Thank you.I took out the shift rod,there was nothing left of the bushing.I will order another bushing and coupler from jbugs tomorrow.
