Here is an image to ensure that you understand the actuator.
and........
which nipple LOCKs <-------------> which nipple UNlocks.
See pics on this other post[/b] |
I really like to see how the actuator looks inside but I can't find anything from this. Do you guys know someone who disassemble it with pics or vid? |

Download and save this Syncro gearbox Workshop manual.pdf.
Here's a link that works (today) : https://siradventure.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/v...ox_094.pdf
I was certain that I've seen it linked somewhere on TheSamba.
I searched hard on theSamba for this but can't find it. _________________

Here is an actuator taken apart. Very simple inside. I've found that major reason for failure is the shaft boot (ususally red on blue actuators) cracks, allowing air into the section that should be under vacuum, a vacuum leak.

Syncro factory gearbox manual on Samba:
Technical - Owner's manuals - Type 2 Bus - Owners/Parts/Other Manuals - 1986
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/1986_vw_syncro_service_manual.php
There's a link to a PDF. If you own a Syncro maybe a good idea to download to your computer for safe keeping.

Section 34, pages 34+35 show the vacuum line layout of a locker.
And Section 34, page 37 shows a diff lock actuator. _________________ Currently:

This Syncro was parked a lot too. I bought from a 81 years old man, who never used the locks. The drive shaft was not on the car when I bought it. The car is in very rare mint condition.

Nice looking Syncro! Did you do the various modifications or did the previous owner?
Questions - Why was the the driveline not installed when you bought?
You have it installed now?
It's possible that the rig has a very aggressive VC (viscus coupling) and what you think is the rear locker is really the VC?
An aggressive VC (or failed in lock mode) will bind the front wheels making steering stiff, (not as much as an engaged front locker) but steering will feel tight.
One way to check if the rear locker is indeed engaged is to stop on loose gravel and then accelerate quickly - check to see if both rear tires are digging into gravel.
If it's an aggressive VC one rear tire and one front tire will dig in.
Just a thought. _________________ Currently:

It was full factory default when I bought.

Most of the time, those who didn't need full time 4X4 uninstall driveshaft because the fuel consumption is better without it. Of course I installed it.

This was my first idea too, but I feel difference most of the time when is unlocked and locked.

My parking place is on gravel surface. I like to park in reverse, so when I needs to turn during reverse parking I can feel the tense and some point the inner back wheel is "overjump" |

I think my problem is lays somewhere here, because the issue is present after driving. If I using the car during it's "cold" it's works like a charm. |
