|
|
Just shipped the car to myself from Arizona to Hawaii.
Drove it to the DMV to do some paperwork.
On the way home it dies with a half tank of fuel and acts like it's not getting fuel to the motor. It had been smelling like gas in the interior since it arrived. Originally thought it might have just been due to a not so good 100mm gas cap seal and some sloshing in transit.
Tow it home.
Look under the tank and there's a pretty steady stream of fuel coming out of the petcock from here:
Took it apart, cleaned it all, put it back together.
Same leak, same place.
Below photo shows all of the washers in the order the whole thing was originally put together when I took it apart the first time.
From left to right:
Main assembly.
Petcock "rotor".
Super thin small OD washer.
Flat washer.
Wavy washer
Compression screw (I'll call it)
So, is there something wrong here?
Any ideas on how to stop this leak, or a source for rebuild parts?
Many thanks in advance. |

Wolfsburg West sells the rebuild kits. They are fairly simple to do. Good luck. _________________ 1956 Rag W/ Semaphores |

My NOS barndoor fuel tap is doing the same thing. There should be a rubber seal inside. Zar werks sells them. I just got one from him the other day. The WW ones are for the later fuel tap without the sediment bowl.

That's for the later petcock. Nothing for the early one. |

You need the squared rubber seal that is made for the early petcocks. I had them made a while back and sell them via Zarwerks. Comes with the fuel bowl seal.

what should the 'hardness' of this rubber seal be?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1418924
i realize this is a difficult question to answer in a forum, hard, soft, it's subjective. someone bought some of the seals above and they think they are too hard. i have no issue at all with refunding their purchase, but we've sold lots of the seals to other folks and this is the first time someone has mentioned the issue, so i am thinking these are supposed to be quite hard?
if a rubber tire is about 70 durometer, these seals are maybe 80 or a bit more. does that seem right, or are the seals old and too hard to use? _________________ SL |

I think they are about 80/85 durometer. they should be able to be slightly bent with your fingers. They are rigid enough to need a little massaging to seat fully but If they were softer than 75 durometer they would disort and bind when compressed and installed. _________________ Fritz Custom Products

thanks. i was thinking also that they need to be fairly hard or the petcock will not rotate. _________________ SL |

But, not as hard as a stone!! These seals you cannot bent it with your finger for sure. If you would touch an original used one or a perfect NOS one, you would feel the difference between them. |

As these are no longer available through zarwerks. Would anybody know if these are still available somewhere, or where I could get a piece of the material to cut one? |
