^The center pipe comes off completely, and the inter cooler is held on by the hoses. Move it out of the way and inspect.

The objective mainly is to not disturb the cooling system.

I agree with you both, if you have never done this hoses, this would be a perfect time to do it.

Iv had to do both these tasks on numerous vans, and its just a nice trick to know, especially if the occasion presents where these hoses were JUST replaced...

the blow out started as a slow drip off the filter.
so if you see this leak, be proactive and do this job before you loose oil pressure driving down the road like me Laughing

Every fall, these O ring issues crop up. The cold makes a marginal or cracked O ring contract enough and voila - a drip!

Well I may have found the issue--nut holding cooler onto stem was barely finger tight! I will probably remove to check and replace O-ring anyway.

I drained the oil first, was this necessary or does the cooler sit above normal oil level?

I replaced the cooler in 2010, 25k miles ago or so. Wonder if I failed to torque then (doubt it but possible, drove thru several winters aok).

A shop did the heads last year, would they have removed the cooler for that?

Not trying to assign blame, just curious do these loosen up? Easy enough to check nut at oil change (which of course I just did the oil couple weeks ago)

Edit to add: Double nut technique (3/4"-16) did not work for me, I had a coolant task anyway so removed the cooler. Old O-ring looked okay but sealant had become brittle. Cleaned it up, put on a new lightly oiled O-ring and torqued to spec. No leaks!
