What kind of glass you got there? Shouldn't there be a sheet of laminate to hold the broken piece in place?

These guys had a similar problem with their front glass. It was safety glass but it was not laminated. They mentioned their safaris were from Creative.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=529816

I believe that it is on page two of their post.

You may want to replace both pieces with laminated safety glass. I'm sure that may not be an easy task in Mexico, but they must have glass shops around in the bigger cities.

Looks like tempered. No buenos(that means "that sucks!" in Canadian Wink ).

You should be able to replace the glass at any glass repair shop that does auto/farm/industrial glass. All they do is pattern the frame and then cut the laminated glass for each based on that. I used to have to do it for tractors, old trucks, school buses etc. all the time when working at a glass shop in western Nebraska and that place was nearly located in a third world country. Wink

yes, we got our glass (and safaris, and popouts and seals, and...) from creative engineering in the UK.

We love their product (and their service) and would buy them again. Their literature clearly stated that the glass is not laminate because their testing showed that the laminate glass eventually cracks under its own weight with open safaris... i cant attest to whether thats true, but have certainly seen a lot of cracked safaris.

i also cant say whether any other glass would have held up and better/worse to the rock that ended this ones existence.
I will say however that when we get glass cut, we may well be getting two new windows... Shocked
---

i talked to a few guys today about getting glass cut. only reason i havent already ordered is that everyone i have talked to has to take measurements and order from someone else. id much rather go to the guy making it and have him trace the other one rather than go based upon a phone call.

...that, and i spent most of the day dodging the policia (the window is like a giant "give the gringo a ticket" sign) and looking for parts for our brakes.
our rear cyinder is apparently shot and the spreader bar for the hand brake is toast.

argh- why again couldnt all of these issues have come up while in LaPaz and near the world's handiest mechanic with machine shop in the rear? Wink

yesterday was super productive and we found a shop who cut safety glass and installed into our old frame. cut out the middleman and saved money- love it!

we will definitely be replacing/upgrading the driver's side as well before a rock makes the decision for us...

another trip needed to vallarta for the brakes, but we are planning on heading down towards the end of next week to meet up with bumfuzzle, pick up our accelerator rebuild kit (and our replacement camera)

inching closer back to "normal" driving conditions Wink

Wow!
That broken glass looks bad, it must have hit really hard!!!
I got laminated glass cut for safaris for my 61 in the mid 90s, at a local glass shop.

I you get a chance head to Chacala, Nayarit. I was hanging out in Sayulita about four years ago and took a day trip to Chacala. It is a cool beach town area. All I know is there is a palapa style restaurant that has a good sized square BBQ/grill in the front where you park to enter that uses mesquite wood. It is a beach side restaurant you can't miss it because Chacala is so small. Go there, ask them to see their daily catch in their cooler. If they have a red snapper, order up the Diablo Snapper. Grilled over mesquite wood with tortillas, it is hands down the best fresh fish I have ever had in my life. It is not super spicy, so don't be deceived by the name. Plus, the location is stunning on the beach and not crowed.

If you go and order it, post a picture, so I can drool.

Finally took care of a few issues over the weekend.

Drove back to vallarta to pickup our parts from Bumfuzzle. Many of you may remember these guys as the sailed around the world and then drove a VW of their own down the panam years ago. Pat and ali were nice enough to allow us to ship a few parts to them and them bring them down after their vaca in the states.

New parts in hand we hit the mechanic and had them work on our brakes while we installed the accelerator rebuild kit. So much nicer to only have to push down on the gas rather than having to pull it up when finished too!

brakes still aren't perfect s they didn't have the separator bar for the handbrake (sigh, even though they told us a few days ago that they did), but certainly closer than we were before. Guess we'll be shipping more items from the states anyway.

we are well rested from out stay here and getting excited to be back on the road in a few weeks!

okay, hasnt been a ton of news to post here as weve been stuck in an apartment going stir crazy (or finding ourselves, or whatever) for the past few weeks.

good news is that in 9 days we hit the road and turn inland,
and the better news is that we have a plan to make sure you all get your fill of cool photos and videos.

We've decided to pit the kombi against jeeps, rovers, FJs and other 4x4 monsters in an offroad race across mexico. no, seriously...

heres what our december looks like:

Link

Id be lying if i didn't say i just love the thought of some badass offroad footage being shot with a kombi trailing along behind!

Along with other last minute preparations, we decided that the bus was in need of some graphics (graffiti) for the rally Shocked

assume we'll be sanding off/spraying over everything at the finish line before continuing on, but it's fun for now.

Ive also been doing some other bus art.
Since we've never been a fan of the "donate" or "buy us a beer" buttons on blogs, we've setup a shop to sell some art, tshirts, etc. I've been asked for a few of these over the years and we figured it might be a win/win for us and anyone looking for some bus stuff...

I'll be adding more over time, but if you like the work and have requests for specific new ideas or colors/changes to fit your ride let me know.
As you are aware...i have a lot of free time on my hands Laughing

Hey Dangerbus, Great lifestyle change. Hopefully you guys will be able to keep this going for a long time.

About your camper interior, would you consider posting a more detailed (blue print) drawing/pictures/size specs of the "Dangerbus" Camper interior??, who knows maybe you could sell a westy style camper logo for the "Dangerbus" Camper do-it yourself interior.

keep the (karma) pics coming, karma being a part of the story keeps the wife interested more than anything.

PostPosted: Mon Dec 03, 2012 1:26 pm    Post subject: carb not working? Reply with quote

Hi guys...thought i'd reach out and see if anyone has any ideas.

we seem to be running on only 2 cylinders...pretty poor timing since we are supposed to be in guanajuato tomorrow for some charity work and the gathering/beginning of the maya rally.

both 1 and 2 aren't firing, but compression tests out okay. All signs seem to point to the right carb not working or not getting fuel?

Im reading through old threads now, but given our time crunch i thought i would see if any of you who are watching this thread have any ideas/suggestions (short of find a mechanic in a hurry) to confirm and better yet fix the problem.

thanks!

Check for intake leaks, maybe a manifold nut has loosened.

thanks.
nothing visual and sadly we dont have any carb cleaner with us (and just did a walk around the shops in town with no luck).

We also had a leak test done maybe 2 months ago and all was good, but i'll see if i can find some carb cleaner at a mechanic in the am.
Assuming a leak would explain our lack of power off the line in first gear however...

would this also stop both cylinders from firing at all?
