Your are going to need a radiator and cooling system mounted somewhere. You will need to adapt the engine's rear mount. I believe it is called the "moustache bar" and you may need to clearance some sheetmetal. You will need to have some sort of ignition system and some sort of fuel system. If you use the WBX engine management system. You will need to adapt a high pressure fuel pump, a fuel return, and add some wiring and relays. It is all solvable, but I don't know that there is a step by step, but if there is, someone has it posted on the internet somewhere.
Oh look what I found on the Google.

I think the '71 still had the removable apron, which makes this considerably easier to install and service. I think it's quite doable and sounds like a fun project. I would think the clutch might be interesting, if you use the T3 bellhousing w/hyd slave. _________________ Casey--

I have one in my '66 bug. Your flywheel/clutch should work on the 1.9. It will bolt to the trans without modification. You will need to fab a rear motor mount. The 1.9 EFI/ignition is very easy to adapt to your bus. You will need to come up with a cooling system as well. The rear heater from a Vanagon is also very easy to adapt under your rear seat and can be ducted into your stock heating tubes and it has a 3 speed fan already on it.

I think his engine is still the old upright, with the big gland nut holding on the flywheel _________________ Casey--

If you're going through the hassle of converting, don't even bother with a 1.9l. Skip to something that will actually make driving a pleasure.
And yes, it will be a hassle but there are actually all the factory conversion parts since they still made the bay window up until recently, with an upright I4 watercooled engine. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

Ohhhh, you are right, I was thinking '73. It will still bolt up to the trans, the flywheel/clutch from a 72-73 I believe will work with out clearancing. I still have the stock swingaxle trans and have clearanced mine to fit the stock Vanagon flywheel/clutch.

The WBX makes a great engine for the old aircoolds. The wiring work to put the 1.9 in will take about 1/2 hour, Suby will take about six. You dont need a whole doner car. There is no expensive adapter plate needed. It keeps the VW all VW if that's important to you. There is some gratafication in using the latest boxer engine vw made.

i saw a guy that put a 2.0 jetta engine in a late bay recently. his cooling system, which i thought looked ingenious, was two radiators. one on each rear side near the engine. he made little hoods to catch air flow and cut screened vent holes in the sides. each radiator had a separate cooling fan and he had toggle switches for them up front. it was pretty neat and i think the same could be done for a WBX if you had time. _________________ '90 Carat w/ '95 phase 1 EJ22 OBD2 conversion |

Personally, I wouldn't mind revisiting my old VW love, which were the Type IIIs, and installing either an Oxy-boxer or a turbo 2.1L WBX. All the mechanical "issues" with the WBX have long ago been sorted, so it really just comes down to grafting on a more modern injection/ignition system. The WBX is simply the best boxer VW made, and it can be coaxed to produce ungodly amounts of power, so why not have fun? _________________ Casey--

When I had to redo the coolant lines in my 85, I gave serious consideration to this. Removing all of those lines front to back would've been awesome, and the rear heater in my vanagon makes more than enough heat for the whole van. I just couldn't bring myself to cut into the van and start down a custom fab route when I live in an apartment. It'd be a cool, and easy to do set up.
I've seen it done before, and there is 1 or more cars which run two small radiators up front rather than 1 large one ~ saw at the Pick a Part which is where I got the idea...

the guy who i saw with this setup was at the old city oil drippers "mind your pints and quarts" show in jacksonville. an inquiry in the bay forum would probably get an answer from the guy, cause im sure hes probably a member. for the, OP, the dual rear side mounted radiators would be the best way to go for this mod, IMO. _________________ '90 Carat w/ '95 phase 1 EJ22 OBD2 conversion |

A tape measure would tell you a lot. How wide is the space between the frame rails? Is the 1.9 wider or narrower than this space at the installed height? At the exhaust level, a fully dressed a WBXer is much wider than either a Type1 or Type 4 engine. |
