Apparently, this guy named Besasie made his own turbos in the 40's. Cast his own parts, did his own testing. Looks like it'll probably sell for a lot of money, but has anyone ever seen something like this or heard the name before? I'd love to get my hands on one, if only to see it in person. 40's turbos, who knew! _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Very cool indeed!
If this is a '40's turbocharger, you would think a way more efficient pre-'65 turbo would be out there as well?

Not a production one, anyway. So far as I know, the Corvair Spider was the first back in 1962 followed shortly by the Olds Jetfire. Generations of the turbo used on the Corvair, first produced for Chevrolet by TRW and later acquired by Rajay, were used on everything from tractors (M&W) to aircraft (usually for turbonormalizing). The compressors were in those days much superior to the old design of those used on early centrifugal superchargers, but they didn't change much for close to 40 years. Turbo tech kicked into high gear in the late 80's and early 90's, with vehicles like the Omni GLHS, Dodge 2.2 and 2.5 inline 4-cylinders, and a whole range of offerings from overseas.
That makes this unit here very interesting, and unique. I'd like to get it simply to examine it. A look back in time, from before the war even. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747
