Hi guys,

Well i am pretty exited about this video that has been made by the new third member of the Campervanculture team Mr Alan Hayes (V-lux on here). A few days ago his gearbox went in his Syncro panel van and the UK's Syncro gearbox Guru Mr Aidan Talbot took the job on to try and sort it all out. Alan took the initiative and whipped his camera out to capture it being stripped apart by the experts and Aidan kindly talked through what had actually given up inside.

This is part one in a set of videos that will be added over the next couple of weeks. I thought I would pop it up on here for all of the nerds (like me Very Happy ) to watch and hope some of you might find it of interest.

Thank you for the strip tease van porn......

Now you have opened the can and we will all want the rest.

You are warned, the sharks are circling for the next installment.

Thank you for sharing this video and Alan for videotaping the breakdown and explanation by Aidan. Good stuff and great information to document. Wink

Look forward to more on this, if possible.

Ditto...thanks for posting. The gearbox is one component of automotive work that I've never taken on (and likely never will!). That said, it's great to see forensics on any failure.

Oh man. I can't wait for the 2nd installment, because intentionally or not this one stops right before we get to see the really gory stuff. Next the gear carrier gets pressed off and you'll see the other end of the two shafts we see sticking out. That's where 4th gear lives. I predict there will be a 3/4 slider in pieces with a chunk having jammed into 3rd or 4th gear, or similar. Going to be some worthy carnage to eyeball. Hope the carnage is limited to the items that failed and that the gearbox can be saved economically.

It's funny...Aidan helped me a ton with sourcing parts for my five speed rebuild. Without him, I would have been dead in the water. However, I had never met him. Seeing this video of him was pretty cool...because he looks like he could be related to Daryl Christensen of AA Transaxle and Aiden and Daryl's shops look eerily similar.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. Smile

Did they sate the pinion gear has teeth missing?

If so, it IS expensive already.....

Opening up a failed sub assembly in front of the customer is great because then it is clear what they are paying for.

Yup, missing sections on 3 pinion teeth, but it doesn't stop there unfortunately.... It gets more expensive. Sad

There's a couple more surprises in store in the next episode.

Oooh, really - missing pinion teeth chunks? Yowza. So mebbe the broken hub managed to simultaneously engage both 3/4 gears? Ah, man - looking forward to the guts.

Wow. When my 3/4 slider hub cracked I knew from participaing in this forum NOT to try to get it into either 3 or 4, so my 11yo son and I drove home at 25mph with the flashers on for 2 hours in 2nd gear. Happily, the cracked hub stayed in place until I stripped it down and the gearbox incurred zero damage. All I had to do was open it, replace the hub, and close it. Of course I can never leave well enough alone and it got a racing hub, new synchros, bearings, a reinforced carrier bearing, and the SA oiling plates as well.

From looking at these videos, it brings it home in very real terms what the forum knowledge did for me. I'm not kidding here - my normal reaction to a gear suddenly becoming difficult would simply have been to play with the shifter and double clutch until I got the gear. But you guys saved me. The Syncro did not even coast to a stop when it happened because I instantly "knew" what failed when I went for 3rd and got major resistance, and simply engaged the clutch in 2nd and continued.

Thanks again, Samba. I dodged the exact bullet you see in this video because of you guys and I'll never forget that Applause
