|
|
Hi all. I'm a new member of the site. I've visited as a guest for years. I just got a Meyers Manx Dune Buggy!
I got her from the man who built her 50+ years ago. He told me the story of her. He knew of a wrecked squareback, so she got a dual carb/dual port engine. He said going down the highway she had a tendency to lift, so he added the side pods. She's been driven to Key West, and he told a story of how he towed his sailboat to Maine with his girlfriend. When we did the paperwork, he laughed that he almost put 20k miles on it. The squarebck speedo gauge had @29k on it when he started.

Looks like a nice survivor....I'd fix the mechanicals and drive the hound out of it.
I like those Halibrand looking front wheels, maybe you can find some for the rear??? _________________ '69 Karmy, '69 Camper, Meyers clone, '65 drag bug, 10.78 @ 128 (sold it) '51 Dodge farm truck,

Nice ride! I enjoy seeing a time capsule buggy. What plans do you have for it? _________________

Nice! Welcome to The Samba. The people here have a lot of knowledge and enjoy sharing it.
My wife and I just got our buggy, Sandy, in December.
Hope you have lots of fun! _________________ 1966 Manx clone (possibly a Joe Poty Enterprises) named SANDY. '70 to '73 1300 cc w/1600 DP heads, twin carbs and headers |

My plan is to give her a resto. Clean up the ugly stuff, and make her shiny. She was last registered in 1978.
Those Halibrandts are pretty cool. They're slotted, and take the oval washers to change the bolt pattern. The rears are 68 Vette. And red lines!

I hope that means just a mechanical resto, a deep clean and a really nice detail, I bet that original gel coat would polish up nicely. Congrats on your survivor. |

She needs taken apart and put back together. The same could be said for any car built 50 years ago. I think I got all the numbers right. She was built on a 68 convertible pan, with a 64 type 3 engine. He said in America/Canadia there was either the fuel injected engine or the twin solex 32 with the electric idle solenoid. This is the carb engine.
The gel coat isn't as wonderful as pics might lead you to believe. She was stored outside for some years, and the tarp didn't cover her nose. So the metal flake is exposed, and no longer green. It's a shame, because otherwise there's not a whole lot of imperfections. She probably has a new color job in her future. |

I wouldn’t necessarily give up on it, once burned it can never 100% but it can look presentable. My Mini-T was a never installed body, no holes but it was stored under a deck and the nose saw a lot of sunshine. I’ll post some pictures and you can see how well a gel coat oxidized deep into the flake can be preserved.
When it first hit the road after installing the body. No clean-up to the gel coat done yet.
It looked better from the back.
So I did some color sanding starting with 320 grit! I worked my way up to 1000 grit and then switched to rubbing compounds.
Here is a little visual contrast since I chose to leave the faux grill in its rough sun-backed condition.
Dead gelcoat polished and waxed can look pretty good. Oh, I get black aluminum smut on my rags every time I polish or wax, but it’s stored in a garage when not in use and has been holding up pretty good.
I would suggest you at least give your vintage gelcoat a chance. Please work on it some and see if it can bring it back to a condition you can be happy with. Mold applied gelcoat is about the most durable finish possible, and I also find it relaxing to have a less than perfect car that I don’t have to worry about in a parking lot or car show. _________________

Thanks for sharing the info on those wheels. I tried searching but didn't find anything. No visible marks on them. |

FLOWER POWER I love it!
I noticed the big back window, and it’s still clear too. That top it would inspire me all the more to try and save the original gelcoat. You have one cool time capsule. The single Impala taillights are a great touch. _________________

This an old pic. I haven't put the top on yet but it's in great shape. The rest of the car is pretty good gel coat, but the nose feels like gravel. It's raw sparkles exposed and faded. That was the original owners only regret with the car is the tarp didn't cover the nose. |
