You know something... I can't remember if it was top or bottom tube! Maybe it doesn't matter. It was only 1 leaf pack I did, top and bottom leaves of the pack. Greasy smelly mess cleaning them though. The shocks are some cheap gas ones and one of these days I will convert them to plain old hydraulic ones. Still a bit to firm for offroading in my opinion. It's softer than my wife's buggy though and she has gas shocks and stock leaf packs.

desertwrx, I like looking at the pictures you post of that buggy. Would you mind telling me if you cut two leaves from both torsion tubes or just one? I'm also curious about your front shock selection and how you like it. I'm in the middle of my build and already had short travel Bilstein gas shocks for the front before I read that they're too stiff for the light front end. I cut two leaves from my lower torsion leaf stack, not even knowing if that will soften things up enough.. but we will find out. I can't wait to get my FG buggy out to Borrego!! |

The PO cut and turned it. That was one thing for my rebuild I left the same. Just cut 2 leaves off the springs and rebuilt the king/link pins.
Some people don't have the SoCal area to play in that the FG buggy was created for, so lowered with stereos fits their lifestyle and the area they live in. There's nothing wrong with that.
I'm in buggy heaven. I live in pretty much the best area of SoCal to own a FG buggy! _________________ 2 fiberglass buggies, 2 non-running Corvair Sandrails!

Just out of curiosity, how much did you cut and turn the front end?
I love buggys with lifted suspensions. Low buggys just don't do it for me. It's nice to see a VW doing what VW's do best _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

I forgot to mention that the tubes have been turned to lift the front. _________________ 2 fiberglass buggies, 2 non-running Corvair Sandrails!

The suspension stops are removed and limit straps are added to keep the shocks from doing that job.
The fenders have never had any head light mounts so the original builder mounted them on the shock towers with angle iron. I welded tabs on the bumper and use that instead.

WOW !! ... that looks like a blast. I'm in the process of building my first dune buggy. Is that a stock front suspension? and what are your head lights mounted too? |

Articulation as the 4WD folks like to talk about! I had driven up to the Calcite Mine in Anza-Borrego Tuesday to camp overnight and on the way down decided to stop and take some shots. I thought this was a cool shot of buggy front suspension articulation.
This old desert mining road is in pretty bad shape and a real challenge for 4X4's. This buggy (with swing axle) just drove up it with no problems and had minor wheel spin. My biggest gripe is 1st gear is too tall (4.37 r&p).
Great view from up there! You can see parts of the road in this pic.
