Is there a VW emblem from another (newer) model that fits or can be adapted to fit the square head lamp grill?

The emblem in question is 125mm chromed 251 853 601 and seems to be about $30. I just checked and they are not extinct any more as I thought when I began this, but now an curious if an alternative is available. One might harvest from a wreck, for example for little or no money, so when this part goes extinct again, that the bling can still be shown.

MK4 jetta/golf for the big emblem grills '88+. They need to be tweaked slightly for mounting though.
They are domed not squared off on the edges like ours so they look more modern.

Other than black and chrome?

Yes, those are the black and chrome ones.

I can always paint my faded chrome one black.....

That is the idea.

My wife had our last A4 Jetta today, so I could not look.

I looked at our A5 and it is too big (over 5 inches or more than 125+ mm) and too sloped.

I will look at the A4 one over the weekend.

Did you do this mod already?

If so, got pix or instructions?

I have wanted to find a modern grill emblem version that will fit on a SA grill but the later grill version is the only option that I have found that was workable.

I have SA grills on all 3 of my vans. VC does have colored SA grill emblems but they are smaller than yours http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_1740_164/south_african_grill_emblems.html

1J5853601 and 1J5853601C seem to be the A4 Golf and Jetta front emblems.

Cost is not cheap either at $36 or $52 for them.

It is unclear which is which actually in the catalog.....

1J5853601 = front grille

1J5853601C = rear hatch/trunk

You are right, I looked again and the C part number is for the rear on the sedan and estate Jettas.

I now see there is a 1J5853601 and a 1J5853601A which are constructed differently.

Both the Vanagon and the A4 Jetta front are listed as 125 mm and the rear of the two look the same.

Now I will have to post pictures......

This is looking promising as the A4 emblem can be had for about $15 shipped.

I may even have some factory campaign replacements I sort of recall, somewhere, maybe.....Free is good, too! Trick is to find them...

Did it just pop in, or were modifications necessary?

Ok Walt. You convinced me. Laughing I ordered one off fleabay just now. Wink I had painted mine silver a while back. The chrome one should be just the ticket. Cheap too.

Although the last time I spent money on aesthetics, the mechanicals got jealous. Shocked

FYI, Chris Turner posted this to the Vanagon email list server in 2001.
Many had this emblem in place soon after.
Run a fine tooth saw behind the snap hooks to make some more room for them to hook into the late Vanagon grill.

The eBay cheapie copies will tarnish within months and the chrome looses its look quick.
Dealer quality emblems are much better and yes twice the cost.

Enjoy.

While test fitting mine just popped in. So I left it. This was before the file was mentioned. I did measure with a caliper and it was the same so I left it alone. I may look closer some other time. For now it stays...
