Horns should be done today.

I've read about installing horn relays but with the hassle of installing them and the rarity of expected use, I'm opting to pass on the relays at this time. Experience after the new horn install may prove differently......

I am also looking seriously at front seat lumbar support bladders and tipping the leading edge of the seats up 3/8".

A year ago at this time I was reassembling the engine, installing new brakes, repacking CV joints, rebuilding the A/C system and trying to accomplish the arm long list of "must do" items before our maiden journey to Montana and Oregon!

How nice it is to be fiddling around with pre-trip fun stuff!

True confession time....... My old horns were probably fine, it's the poor grounding system.

Installed new horns, same anemic reaction upon pressing the horn pad.

Pulled out a relay and harness I keep on the shelf, wired it in (sloppily I'm afraid as a test) and HONK!!!!!

Now to install it properly.......
How to keep it dry down there in the road splash zone?

I'm thinking of using one of my many stock piled Home Depot water proof boxes like I used for the idle control relay.

It would probably be a great spot for a spare key too.......

So, Last years Western trek showed me exactly how BIG the Western States are and how little the Vanagons fuel tank is!

There was a panicky point in North Dakota that Infeared I'd run out and purchased the most expensive fuel of my journey in some tiny town mid State.

I've toyed around with auxilary fuel tank ideas but time is up! No auxilary fuel tank, a pending trip to the BIG State region is looming.

Picked up these two 1 1/2 gallon cans this morning. 3 Gallons of fuel is peace of mind for an OCD self sufficient SOB!

Their size make them sit nicely up top. I'll paint them white (or put them in a white bag) to cut heat build up in them.

A cheap experiment, not heavy to hoist up or down and hopefully they never are used.

Not The ideal solution but it is a solution for now.

Are the distances between fuel stations so vast? I get well over 200 miles on a tank and I have a hard time imagining that far between freeway interchanges/trucks stops here in the West.

I worry....... What if...... Don't like the stress of what if......

I don't run Freeways when other options are possible.

The worst was Bend Or to Ashland Or in the middle of the night.
I had planned a route that involved basically zero towns of any size but knew the only open late night gas would be in KFalls, so I altered my route.

I get that. Knowing the range you can expect helps. My gas gauge burns through the top half in no time and then sips the bottom half. Knowing that 250 miles is the magic number eases my mind.

There are stretches of Eastern MT. where that would come close to not being enough.

I have driven cross-country from Seattle to Florida each year in my van since 2013. I take back roads as much as possible. I've come close to running out of fuel several times on the back roads, mostly in Montana, Nevada, and Utah. I have done exactly what Dave is doing now. I strapped a 2 gallon fuel can on top of the luggage rack. It has given me peace of mind. If you stick to the interstates you'll be fine, but those routes are so much less interesting than the "Blue Highways" of William Least Heat Moon.
Dave, if you make it to Seattle this time you have a place to park you van, some cold beers, and a guest bedroom too. It's the least I can do to pay you back for all your work here on the Samba. Thank you.

Dave,
Did you get a chance to work on that storage space? I know the California vans have camp chairs stored in that space.

I like the idea of storing stuff there. I have some ideas for my own but would to see others. Thanks!

I am going to install a new oil pressure plunger and Spring.
I have decent numbers, I'm curious about changes (if any) when replacing old with new.

Documenting before oil pressures.

figborg, I just saw your question.
I haven't bothered to follow through with a door pocket in the lid. With just the two of us I found that space is not a major concern.

Just curious, Dave...do you have a tach in your rig or are you just "ear-balling" it...???

Dave, why do you feel the need to fool with the oil pressure system? Those numbers look very fine to me. If it ain't broke....

I carry a mountain of spare parts, but reading posts here it is mentioned by many over and over and over again to replace the temp II sender.

Mine in the engine is fairly new but I thought that maybe I should put one in my highway travel stash!
Yet another part to carry that I'll never need! Rolling Eyes

Installed my sliding door bump stop I purchased from VanCafe.

It fit well, I'll take a minor issue with the fitting closest to the body, the thin tail, but it works just fine.

I did find it easier to remove the track cover.
