Seven (7) coats of paint on this runner lip for the grooved bearing..... It is now Slicker than owl snot on a frozen stump!
All told I've got about 12 hours into this stupid rusty slider setup! Between scraping, brushing sanding, priming, painting, painting, sanding, painting, sanding, painting, painting, sanding and painting. For such a simple confined repair, This is actually one of the more time sucking jobs that I've done on this unit!
I've still got to reassemble and adjust once all of my new parts wander in!
I may do one more coat on the lower door slider track today..... Just because.....
Now my concern is what prevents the metal bearings from chewing away the beautiful new paint in a very short time?
Seems like a really short sighted design here...... But I've got thoughts!

Hi Dave, I am almost to this part - how did this tape work out? I like the idea of brown cloth tape rather than black Gorilla tape.
Thanks,

I fixed my factory Westy screens in about 15 minutes.
I had a roll of black fiberglass screen.
I cut two pieces larger than the screen frame.
I used my framing square and cut two perpendicular sides perfectly straight.
I laid this perfect 90* cut on the screen frame and carefully applied hot glue. I was careful to pull out any sags or wrinkles.
I let these two sides harden well.
I then carefully cut the screen with a utility knife to a perfect fit on the other two sides.
I pulled the screen taught with two fingers and applied hot glue between my fingers.
I "stitch" glued the remaining two sides keeping the screen taught and wrinkle free.
It was easy! Hot glue IS hot so be careful. i have a high heat tolerance, others may find what I did painful.
Just take your time, it's easy!
Finished products.....

Motivated by my daughters request to borrow the Van for a camping trip
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=657989
I finished many mostly done projects and took the first fairly long journey of the year out to our vacation home in Berks County Pa.
Saw a White Vanagon in the Weis parking lot in Oley but didn,t get a chance to say "Hi!" (Vanagon sightings are rare here in the East and are note worthy occasions)
I took the Van for I wanted to road test it after many alterations during the "off" season.
The RMW coolant tank is GREAT!!! With no air bubble problems due to its installation.
I do miss the translucent plastic which immediately told you the coolant level but that's a small price to pay for a quality tank and "normal" radiator cap!
My Jeep Wrangler Mirrors? OMG! Where were they last Summer?!? I duct taped them in place using sticks for support!
Niw.....Rock solid, always in the same place! LOVE THEM!!!
New window seals? Shhh...... Quiet, we can actually talk to each other!
Wing Window stays open where I put it at highway speeds!
The center hump heat? Gone! Slight warmth but not the hellish furnace of last Summer!
Sliding door? Easy and quiet operation, no SCREEEEEEECH!!!!!
The A/C worked so well we had to turn on the heat!
Bully Steps and side step? Pure luxury! My 3 yr old grand daughter really appreciated the side step.
The ARB awning rode solid, we didn't deploy it though.
My three year old Grand daughter approves of the Van and was giving driving lessons to her Dad and I......

Dave, I've been following your thread on this for a long time, I am so psyched for you that you're out on the road with all of these great modifications and fixes. I'm in central jerz, will keep an eye out for you when we head north on camping trips _________________ 1986 Wolfsburg Weekender

Yeah, I'm with you on cutting OG wires and such, even given how non-original my rig is. It has to be for a solid improvement to make me do it and this is definitely one of those. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

The headlights don't have little affordances in the corners that will take a screw? Mine did. That was the key to getting it to work for me, so I didn't have to muck up the grille. How did I get so lucky? _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

On my last trip to Pennsylvania I had occassion to use the horn but little to nothing happened.
I pulled the horns today, not original at all, poorly mounted with a Wood Screw! had new wires run, was a rusted mass of metal poorly installed by my PO.
I picked up a pair of horns at my FLAPS today, I'm not picky about tone, I just want them to work!
A work in process, had to stop, 6 PM, Dinner and it's Saturday..... That means Gin & Tonics, a fire and it's Prairie Home Companion night! 👍
A nice chunk of beef, fresh Jersey White Corn, mashed potatoes...... Yum..... But wait! It's 97* in NYC tonight!
Sadly, no fire......
