No luck on a search. Seems the 72-73 turn signal switches are very hard to find. Anyone know where to get one or modify an earlier or later switch to work? |

Yes, the Classifieds are an option, but I'd hoped to spend less than $100. Not realistic? |

You can still find the odd cheap one, that's why I posted the people parting buses. But in reality you are looking for a 1 1/2 year only part for a 39 year old vehicle, some other makes of similar vintage have an extra 0 after the prices. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

After looking for two years, I finally bought a turn signal switch from a guy on the samba in France. He appears to have more in the Samba classifieds. I tried repairing my old switch first, but ended up making it worse. The switches really were not meant to be serviced or repaired, therefore, I would not buy a used switch unless you can get the seller to stand behind his product. It cost me about $190 USD new, but well worth it. Hopefully, I never need to buy another. _________________ 1973 Orange Westy 2.0L w/ dual Kadron carburators, General Grabber All Terrains, 091 Transmission |

In that case, I had better hang on to the set of 1974 VW Type 2 steering-column switches, that I have as spares, for my 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 Westfalia Continental. _________________ Regards.

too damn right nigel. if it's getting that we are expected to give a lifetime garantee on 40 year old used parts then i ain't selling anything either.
i have plenty of these 73/74 switches lying around. |

I think that Aircooled Museum chap, thinks that all air-cooled VW spares (NOS or second-hand) are like gold dust and asks gold-bullion prices to match! _________________ Regards.

Ok, a lifetime guarantee was never suggested when buying this switch. What was suggested is that the buyer stand behind the product he is selling. There are a lot of people out there that will sell you their crap, and they probably know its crap most of the time. If I buy a part and find out it is complete garbage, I would expect to be able to return it for a refund and the seller can throw the part away. These switches have too many platic parts that get brittle over time and then break. They are completely useless at that point. I'm happy that you have tons of the switches, but if they don't work, you really have nothing but garbage taking up space. If there is somebody that is lucky enough to have a few NOS switches lying around, he can sell them for whatever he wants. The demand is high and the supply is very low. I would rather pay $190 once, rather than paying $50 gambling that I might find one that works. Eventually I would still have to pay the $190. My point is, it's hard to trust that someone is selling you a good used part. _________________ 1973 Orange Westy 2.0L w/ dual Kadron carburators, General Grabber All Terrains, 091 Transmission |

I was mainly indicating that with the increasing scarsity and prices, of such specialised parts, it would be prudent for me to hoard this spare, just in case the one which was factory-fitted to my vehicle, eventually fails! _________________ Regards.

I totally agree with you. I would not let those switches go. You're a lucky person to have them. _________________ 1973 Orange Westy 2.0L w/ dual Kadron carburators, General Grabber All Terrains, 091 Transmission |

So you wouldn't stand behind one of your newly padded dashboards? If I'm paying $150 for a dash, then it better not fade or crack after a short period of time. You CAN stand behind the obvious stuff. If the turn signal is cracked to begin with and doesn't actually click when it engages or doesn't even cancel, I would consider that something that a seller would notice before it was sold. I'm sure I have a lot of parts I could sell that are not working and never will work, but I would consider that unethical. If I sold something and it didn't work, the buyer would get all their money back and I would just throw the part away. Sure, there are some parts that just can't be tested until it is installed. _________________ 1973 Orange Westy 2.0L w/ dual Kadron carburators, General Grabber All Terrains, 091 Transmission |

dat's a sensible business code.
seriously. it's really getting almost as bad on the bay scene as with the splittie crew.
the brotherhood ideal is all well and good but a few decades out of date as far as total strangers are concerned.
when it's getting to multi tens of thousands of $$$'s vehicles and people who don't know which end of a screwdriver to insert in the appropriate place who expect as new parts for peanuts.............. |

Hi there - bumping this old post up, because I'm looking for a replacement 1973 indicator switch and stalk, and all roads seem to lead back to this 2012 post. Anybody know where I can find one? (Apart from that French museum site which is still asking 160EUR for one!). Cheers- Sam |
