I need to add a horn to my buggy as the previous owner didn’t put one in during his rebuild. With all the crazies on their cellphones around here, I really need one, so I’m wondering what people are using – a stock VW horn or something else?

I like the sound of the Stebel Nautilus compact horn (http://bit.ly/YivZIl), but some reviews say it doesn’t hold up and others say they love them. It seems to look and sound just like the WOLO Bad boy ( http://bit.ly/11JkjT -scroll down past the Max to the Big Boy) , which you can get at Harbor Freight for about half the price of the Stebel. Does anyone have any experience with either of these horns? I am completely open to any suggestions about what to use.

Thanks.
Rick

You may want to install more than one horn.
Stock type horn for saying hi or getting somone moving at a light.
Air horn or something really loud to get someone attention when they trying to run you off the road because they are distracted.

Well - one thing to think about and address is what kind of steering column you have as far as actuating the horn....

I used a set of twin horns from a late model Subaru Outback which I am pretty sure they are the same as the Subaru Forrester. I expect they would be the same in the US model as the Australian ones. They are a high/low set and they are quite loud and cheap to pick up from a wreckers.

I have a set (small twin) air horns that were gifted to me.... They are loud and sort of high pitched and really get your attention.... Try to find something unique and loud.... Something sort of like these...

The horn button is going to be on the dash.

That should not be a issue....

Standard VW style.. One of two.. Other method is a braided strap around steering donut and horn button grabs it ground from steering shaft...

Anything you want it to be.... Upper two styles use a relay...

I use a stock style VW replacement horn mounted up under the hood to keep it safe and mostly dry. I think they are available for about $15 at most FLAPS.
