I'm restoring a nice original '73 Westy . This van has lived it's life in the rust belt of Southern Ontario Canada but I'm sure it spent most winters in storage because there is just a "normal" amount of rust.
I'm really amazed at he amount of road dirt and rust that has fallen out of the body as I open up the rusty panels. Whenever I use my air chisel or hammer I leave an outline of dirt around the perimeter.
If I had bothered to weigh it from the beginning I'd wager I have removed 25 lbs. or more of crap. I hope the weight loss will reflect in a faster & more fuel efficient bus. Confused

Hit the cavities with Osphos or some other form of phosphoric acid rust proofing.

By the way, rust weights more than steel, so at this point you are probably just holding even. Wink

I've seen some where all the jack points, rockers and outriggers were full solid with dust or sand (the ones filled with salty sand empty themselves in a few years) Wink
Any bus I get that's a keeper goes on an outdoor hoist and I spend an afternoon shooting a pressurewasher into every conceivable orfice until all the water runs clear, messy but effective, the sand dune on the ground after is usually quite alarming. Leaving it in there holds moisture and feeds corrosion year round. Once it's had a week or two to dry out I go at it with the cavity protection, Rust check is available from Canadian tire and works well.
