I think you should edit your title and your post to say you are talking about an automatic transmission and not a turbo charger. Otherwise you might not get any helpful responses. |

The turbine shaft is out too far - should be flush to expose more pump shaft.

Is the spline line up the only thing keeping this from sliding in, I can feel it bottom out when pushing it in. I have a "practice transmission" which I've been playing with and there is nothing from keeping the shaft from sliding inwards, and I can pull it out till the snap rings catch. It seems that the shaft floats in the tube and is supported by the TC and a spline hub in the transmission. |

I just checked 2 units I have sitting on the ground here in my shop and both are flush. I remember an automatic o/h many years ago that I had a similar issue. I didn't get the forward clutch pack to fully seat which caused it to rest about a half inch proud. I had to completely disassemble and carefully reassemble.
Hang in there - drink a couple of beers and start off fresh.

I think it is out too far. Looking at a torque converter, the inner shaft is about even with the outer..maybe 6mm longer. I don't think that the inner shaft is fully engaged in the back of the transmission. |

All I did was reseal and replaces the gaskets, the separation plate was the deepest I disassembled the transmission, I replaced the seals on the final drive also, so the only thing I can think of is that the shaft splines aren't fitting into the reverse drive ring.
Should the turbine shaft been have assembled on the transmission and then the final drive slipped onto the shaft then tightened up? because the shaft will come out of the final drive from the inside but from the outside. |

You should be fine and disassembly won't be necessary if you didn't remove the separation plate. I was just guessing since I didn't know the extent that you disassembled the transmission. The shaft should still go in a bit further. It can be a real bear to line it up and get it fully inserted. As it is right now the tc will bind on the flex plate and possibly damage the tc if you force the install. Be patient - walk away from it and come back fresh.
Good Luck

I think your "sealing rings" on the shaft are out of position. They are tricky and the shaft will feel like it is firmly in place..when it is the "sealing rings" having popped out of their running position and holding the shaft too far foward.
Of course the shaft spines must aline in the back of the transmission too.
If you get too forceful with the shaft the "sealing ring(s)" can be damaged..a real pain.
What I do is slowly spin the shaft with my fingers and at the same time, GENTLY tap the shaft with a plastic headed hammer. Take your time, it could take a minute or so. Make sure the "sealing rings" are lubed with Vaseline or AFT.
Spin the shaft and be gentle tapping with the plastic hammer. The shaft will suddenly drop into position. If you have to force it..the "sealing rings" will be bent or broken. |

We had that storm come though here last night and we lost power, the weather was perfect today to put the motor in, I imagine they'll be no power tomorrow so I'll have all day to screw with it or it will screw with me.
Thanks |

This is end of the shaft seated inside the forward clutch assembly. It can be a snug fit. The Sealing Rings run just outside. There is a small clip in a groove on the shaft to keep it from going too far into the forward clutch..make sure you have one.
The AFT pump can be seen behind the forward clutch.
This is the shaft at the forward clutch end, complete with a broken sealing ring. Too much force and they will break. |

Don't the sealing rings stay inside the tube? |

Yes..well... turbine shaft inside the pinion shaft. I don't know if there is a "step" in the running surface of the PS or just some grooves from being in service with the old sealing rings. They will catch in there. Gentle rotational force is the key to compress and seat the sealing rings and engage the forward clutch spines. |

That worked, lighty tap the shaft until you can feel the splines while rotating, than tap alittle harder and it will pop in flush. |

Had the same issue, tried the same fix - it worked! Thank you so much for the help. I was FREAKED OUT when I noticed the turbine shaft protruding like that!
Gotta love the Samba... |

Does anyone know a good source for turbine shaft rings??
I broke a tab off of one while re-inserting the turbine shaft... _________________ '91 GL - 2.1 automatic named Klaus for weekend adventures.

I also am dealing with a broken shaft ring. If anyone has a source on where to get these, it would be much appreciated. |
